Item description for While Interwoven Echoes Drip into a Hybrid Body by Chris Cunningham...
In the mid-twentieth century, innovators like John Cage, Yoko Ono and George Brecht brought fine arts and music together; in that convergence, performance and the use of the body gave new meanings to both elements. More recently, beginning in the 1990s, a new round of fusion has begun, as new forms of presentation in the fine arts have absorbed pop and DJ culture and other aural elements into electronic and multimedia works. This use of sound has precipitated a hybridization of performance art and sculpture, and the emergence of new forms where, in some cases, sound can lose its liminal status and become self-sufficient. While Interwoven Echoes Drip into a Hybrid Body investigates these developments through "sound sculptures" and other related work from artists including Rita Ackermann and Agathe Snow, Chris Cunningham, Bjark, and Banks Violette.
