Item description for The Yanius Mystery by Chester Morgan...

Overview
JB Ronsuer is a linguist who is an expert in language translation. When an alien spaceship comes to Earth, he is called to help translate their language. JB's long-time girlfriend was crippled in an automobile accident, and he is very disappointed that, despite their vast knowledge, the space people cannot help her. JB is sent with the space people on the return flight to their planet, which is circling the star Alpha-Centauri. The planet Antobia is a marvelous place with many wonders, both manmade and natural. However, when the Antobia Space Commission invites JB to go to a less developed planet where the translation of languages will be important, he agrees to go. Adventures on this planet are exciting, educational, and sometimes dangerous. The travelers hear a remarkable teacher, Yanius, and they realize God has sent him to teach and help these people just as Jesus did when He came to Earth. JB falls in love with a beautiful, charming girl, but circumstances contrive to prevent him from marrying her and taking her back to Earth. When JB returns to Earth, he finds that his old girlfriend, who had refused to marry him in her crippled state, had been suddenly cured. He calculated that it happened on the day that he told Yanius about her when he was billions of miles away. How great is God's power!

My review:

Since this book is Christian and deals with different theological issues, I want to discuss them first. Firstly, the author supports evolution and that is reflected in the book, but that topic was not really a big focus of the text. Secondly, the Messiah characters were presented mainly as teachers that we should follow, and that by following them, society will grow and evolve, rather than stay backward. It was just a "follow His teachings" type of message and the deeper message of the gospel was only hinted at. The Messiah character encountered on another world was only portrayed in what I call "love" mode. His actions only reflected Christ if the teaching was about love. I did not find him rebuking the religious leaders as in the Bible, or running off money lenders from the temple with a whip. Only one side of the Lord was shown. In the book, though, He was portrayed as determined and unfearful in what He was doing. I addressed these aspects because they were a major background theme of the novel. Another spiritual aspect I found lacking was when a miraculous healing occurred and the character didn't even reveal to the other person that it was of the Lord -- at least not in the text. I would think a believer would want to give God the glory and thank Him at that moment. I found the person of the Messiah to be more regarded for moral teachings beneficial to society than for what He accomplished in His death and resurrection. Maybe that is just my perceptions, but that is what I honestly got from the spiritual side of the book. I present all these topics for you to make your own decision on the spiritual aspects.

On to the actual story, aside from spiritual considerations. I found that the text was okay, once I got used to it, but at times it was very abrupt and many happenings were just listed and felt rushed in the story transitions. The author has previously published technical papers, and at times I felt that the narrative leaned in the direction of that style. The actual story was interesting when I got used to the writing style, and it became better as the book progressed. The worlds were imaginative and interesting, as well as the varied characters, technologies, and story arcs.

Overall, combining the likeable story with the questionable spiritual aspects, I gave it a 3.5 as a novel. I am sure people who agree with all aspects of the novel will rate it much higher, at least a 4 to a 4.5. If you agree with the spiritual things I outlined, then by all means, give this novel a look, as you will probably like it.
