Item description for Elijah: Man Who Stood With God (Great Lives) by Charles R. Swindoll...
Overview Exploring the depths of Elijah's fascinating life as a prophet of God in Great Lives: Elijah, Swindoll does not gloss over his human weaknesses; rather, he presents an honest picture of this ordinary man whom God transformed into His personal spokesman to confront idolatry and evil in the ancient world.
Alone, Elijah faced off with over four hundred prophets of the false god Baal?and won. Yet, on another occasion, he became so terrified of a woman that he ran for his life. He was Elijah--the man in a whirlwind, the humble hero.
In a world that has lost its way, due in part to the lack of balanced, godly leadership, we are more than ever in need of a few Elijah-like men and women who are not afraid to live courageously among their peers as they walk humbly with God.
Where are great leaders like Elijah today? Uncompromisingly strong, yet self-controlled. Disciplined, yet forgiving. Audaciously courageous, yet kind. Heroic in the heat of battle, yet humble in the aftermath.
We see a few such men and women, but the list is tragically short. Rarely does someone model these invaluable traits more obviously than God's mighty prophet Elijah, whose calling was anything but calm and free from conflict. Nevertheless, as you are about to discover in this book. Elijah exemplified true heroism and genuine humility amid the relentless pressure of battle.
"Elijah: A Man of Heroism and Humility" is the fifth volume in the best-selling Great Lives from God's Word series by Charles Swindoll. The series also includes such powerful biographies as "Joseph, David, Esther, "and" Moses."
Exploring the depths of Elijah's fascinating life as a prophet of God, Swindoll does not gloss over his human weaknesses; rather, he presents an honest picture of this ordinary man who God transformed into His personal spokesman to confront idolatry and evil in the ancient world. You will find that it's a life worth emulating.
In a world that has lost its way, due in part to the lack of balanced, godly leadership, we are more than ever in need of a few Elijah-like men and women who are not afraid to live courageously among their peers as they walk humbly with their God.
"May this book establish deep within you a desire to stand strong for what is right as you bow low before Him who is worthy of your trust and obedience."-Charles Swindoll

Reviews - What do customers think about Elijah: Man Who Stood With God (Great Lives)?
Awesome Oct 11, 2009
This book is just another awesome book by an awesome author. I love the Great Lives Series. Great read.
Interesting biography and commentary Jul 14, 2009
A good audiobook on the life of Elijah. Swindoll follows Elijah through his life and makes comments on how the stages of his life relate to challenges for us today. He takes brief mentions and expands on how they made Elijah the man God wanted. It was especially interesting how much Elijah traveled. Not riveting, but an interesting read about the life of a great prophet of God.
Elijah . . . I AM Mar 1, 2009
I really enjoyed reading this book. Swindoll understands much of what was going on to a point that the reader can almost experience how God was working and talking through Elijah.
Elijah - The man of mystery is now like a close companion Feb 17, 2009
Little is known about Elijah. He comes on the scene for a few chapters and as abruptly as he came on the stage, he's taken away in a firey chariot. Although the Bible spends little time in explaining his life, Elijah becomes almost more pivital then King David himself, even tho almost four books are contributed to David and a few Chapters on Elijah, Elijah is one of the chosen two who meets Jesus on the mount of transfiguration.
Charles draws every bit of information he can from Elijahs ministry and explains it in detail. Elijah, once a man of mystery, now can be known almost as a close friend.
This is my favorite book from the series of 'Great lives from Gods word' and really my favorite book of all of Chuck's works (so far at least, I'm about to embark on a few more soon).
This book teaches us about Boldness, Faith, Being God Centered, Being self sufficent as opposed to being God sufficent, and the problem of feeling insecure
A great book and a must have for everyone
God Bless, Your brother in Christ, -Brian
Great Book!! Dec 28, 2007
Elijah is one of my favorite characters in the Bible. One minute he's a great warrior beating out hundreds of other fake prophets, the next minute he's running from a woman, Jezebel,!! Chuck Swindoll makes his characters come to life, you live inside their skins with them and feel their pain and their triumph. This is a great book
