Item description for David: Man Of Passion & Destiny (Great Lives) by Charles R. Swindoll...
Overview Dr. Swindoll explores the Old Testament shepherd, king, and psalmist, to answer the question, "What does it mean to be someone after God's own heart?"
David was a man after God's own heart . . .
What does it mean to be someone "after God's own heart?" David, Old Testament Shepherd, king, and psalmist, offers an answer in the shape of his own life.
In many ways he was a most extraordinary man―intelligent, handsome, abundantly gifted as a poet, musician, warrior, and administrator. Yet in other ways he was a most ordinary man―often gripped by destructive passion, rocked by family chaos and personal tragedy, and motivated by political expediency. How did David become the national hero of God's chosen people? Why is he the one character in the Bible described as "a man after God's own heart?" Chuck Swindoll explores the many facets of David―from his teenage years and dysfunctional family life to his overwhelming passion for God.
David's life offers hope to all of us. It shows that God can do extraordinary things through ordinary men and women. And "David" offers an insightful perspective on what it means to be truly spiritual, to become like David―men and women after God's own heart.
"David "is the first of a multi-volume series exploring great lives from the Bible. Chuck Swindoll wants to show us that these men and women became great when they placed themselves at the Lord's disposal, allowing Him to develop within them the marks of true character: humility, purity, authenticity, and integrity. To live a life God considers "great" is within the reach of everyone who submits to him.

A Great Man that is like any other man Apr 11, 2010
I bought this book because I wanted to know the legendary King David more intimately since I've adopted "David" as both my baptism and confirmation name. What attracted me most to him was his "human-ness" - he was certainly not a perfect man but he was humble and God-fearing.
The one most powerful lesson that I've learnt here is that no matter how good we are, we are still weak humans, prone to stupid and grievous mistakes; King David was Israel's greatest king and a "man after God's heart" but he still committed adultery and murder!
Hence, we must always be on our spiritual guard, always relying on the grace of God to overcome life's challenges and temptations...
Insightful and interesting Feb 20, 2010
Book was informative and well-written. Swindoll is a master of distilling the ancient account of David's life and creating life-lessons for us from his example. I will probably listen to this book again before I begin to loan it to others. My only disappointment was the voice of the reader--kind of monotonous.
More Enjoyable Than I Thought It Would Be Dec 12, 2009
I was able to complete David during a two week vacation a few years ago. This book was the first book release from the Great Lives from God's Word Series and was a birthday gift from my wife. I have also read Swindoll's biographies on Moses, Joseph, Job, Paul, and Jesus. Like in Swindoll's Paul: A Man of Grace and Grit, we are reminded how a man can become great when he places himself at the Lord's disposal. We can all live "great" lives by submitting to our Father. My only knock against this book is the rather elementary artwork on the cover. I don't feel very manly carrying this book around. :-) Despite that, I'm really glad my wife purchased this book for me. It has resulted in me warmly welcoming other books from this multi-volume series into our library.
A good book that studies the life of David, from the Bible. Jun 14, 2009
No other Old Testament figure has as many pages written about him as David, the second king of Israel. This book has many insightful looks into King David, who, is a figure of Christ Himself. I recommend any of the "great lives" series by Chuck Swindol.
They are always insightful, accurate, and help along the way of understanding our Lord Jesus Christ. You will get a whole new picture of Christ through the life of David, and, if you are saved this will be an immediate treasure for you. If you are not saved, this book points you to Bible verses where you can read about the great sacrifice a kind, loving, merciful God made that we can have the hope someday we may be saved asa well.
Good book for both believers and non-believers alike. Check out all the "great lives" series of books to help you learn and grow as a Christian. Much scripture is in these books- and it's the BIBLE that can lead us to Christ (faith commeth though hearing and hearing through the WORD OF GOD)...........Romans 10:17
Easy Read with New Insites Nov 21, 2008
I love biographys but Biblical ones are not something I would normaly choose. I heard on National Public Radio (NPR)a while back a review (or was it a brief discussion?) about this book that was very positive.
I didn't really know what to expect "style-wise" but it was a comfortable, easy read. I would say it was more like a relaxed "sermon" (which I mean only in the most positive light).
For readers not particularly familiar with David's life, there were "reminders" of people and actions that happened earlier in the book. These reminders would help the reader to keep track of characters and/or significant events that happened in an earlier section of the book.
I learned several things I did not know about David's life that could be applied to today's life. The author took the time to research several words or phrases (Greek sources and/or other authors) that more completely explained an interpretation and meaning of a phrase.
The analisys of the "lessons we would learn" from David's life were interesting and informative whether you view the Bible/Old Testament as a literal interpretation or a parable.
It's nothing radical, just a thought provoking discussion/concepts interesting to ponder.
