Item description for Inside The Mind Of A Teen Killer by Phil Chalmers...

Overview
Peer into the minds of teen killers like Pearl, Mississippi school shooter Luke Woodham with researcher Phil Chalmers as your guide to understand the motives behind, and possibly prevent, their horrifying violence.

Luke Woodham, a pudgy 16-year-old, woke up one day, slit his mother's throat, and then drove to school, where he shot 9 people, including his girlfriend. Why? In Inside the Mind of a Teen Killer, Chalmers, who has been interviewing teen murderers and serial killers for over a decade, recounts Woodham's gripping and horrifying story, plumbing his motives, and peering into the killer's mind. Chalmers also weaves into the narrative his reasearch about teen culture, including comparisons with other teen killers, to analyze the disturbing ascent of teen violence and offer ways that we, as individuals, leaders, and communities, can help defuse this alarming trend.

Inside the Mind of a Teen Killer is a culmination of Phil Chalmers' fifteen-year study on teen murder and school violence.  This is an anti-violence project aimed at teens, parents, youth workers, teachers, and law enforcement. The most unique part of the book is the words of the killers themselves, explaining why they committed the crimes, what led them to murder, and how we could have helped them. The goal of this book is to educate America and the world on the growing problem of teen murder and school violence, and hopefully stop teen murder and save innocent lives. Phil interviewed nearly 200 teen killers and school shooters for this book, and it's sure to change the way America and the world thinks about the growing trend of juvenile homicide.

Book release date to coincide with the 10-year anniversary of Columbine, April 20, 2009.

"Phil Chalmers has interviewed the killers. He has corresponded with them extensively. He has exhaustively researched their crimes. There is no human being alive who knows more about these killers, and as you read this book, you will truly be taken "Inside the Mind of a Teen Killer."  Lt. Col Dave Grossman, U.S. Army (retired), murder expert, and author of "On Killing" and "Stop Teaching Our Kids To Kill"

"I am not insane, I am angry. I killed because people like me are mistreated every day. I did this to show society, 'push us and we will push back'?All throughout my life I was ridiculed, always beaten, always hated? It was a scream in sheer agony saying that if you can't pry your eyes open, if I can't do it through pacifism, if I can's show you through the displaying of intelligence, then I will do it with a bullet."  Pearl, Mississippi school shooter Luke Woodham

Reviews - What do customers think about Inside The Mind Of A Teen Killer?

INSIDE THE MIND OF AN IDIOT  Mar 23, 2010
Absolutely ridiculous. This book is nothing more than a rerun of Lt. Col. Grossman's ideas and works like Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill.

Chalmers blames everybody and everything but the people who are actually responsible for pulling the trigger. On top of this, he seems to buy into prisoners' claims that they have found God and are rehabilitated.

At no point did I read anything about how these kids think and what sets them off. I read nothing about what was going through their heads when they committed their crimes. All I read was a man who seems to enjoy writing and corresponding with serial killers and kids who kill and tries to justify it with this ridiculous book.

The back cover promises alot, and delivers NONE of it.

DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY!

very enlighting  Sep 22, 2009
This book was very informative and a must for anyone with teens. It gives you an insight to the way these teens think and realize that even "normal" kids can do bad things. I would encourage anyone who has a teen, educates teens and law enforcement to read this book. Phil Chalmers is very educated in this topic. He shares his information with the reader and makes you really think about what kind of teens we are turning out these days.

Why Everyone Else Makes Teens Kill  Jun 30, 2009
I had such high hopes after reading the Kindle Sample of this book. I'm very interested in why people commit the crimes that they do, especially children. I was hoping to find some insights because so many of the kids who do commit crimes end up not able to talk. What I got instead was a bunch of vague correlations to a bunch of nonsense excuses: The devil/video game/music/movies/drugs/doctors/bullies made me do it. Pretty much everything is to blame except the kids or their parents....definitely not guns.

While I do believe that Chalmers is citing many of the things that DO go into the conditions that make it easier for teens to kill I believe that he's missing the point and oversimplifying the matter. He does explore some very good points about the entertainment that children have access to such as the horror porn. I would say, however, that the rise in senseless violence is a product and symptom of a changing society, not the actual reason for the change. Crime and violence has been around for a long time Before "Natural Born Killers" there was Starkweather and Fugate who's late 1950s rampage is echoed in the film. Unfortunately, instead of presenting research the book turns into a preachy condemnation of villians who hide behind the 1st amendment while they exhort kids to kill. Only in the last chapter does he briefly admit that parents actually have the power to shape their child's experiences and behaviors.

It's disheartening to me that such a promising book with some very pertinent information lose in the midst of excuse making. This excuse making was so broad and overwhelming and he actually brought up multiple times Ted Bundy's last manipulation, his "confession" to Dr. James Dobson that pornography made him do it. I think it's closer to the truth to say that in Bundy's last days, after his attempt to trade the locations of undiscovered victim's bodies for a little more time on earth failed, he sought of the "Focus on the Family" head man to paint a more sympathetic picture of himself by feeding them what the Christian right wants to hear: Pornography made me do it. I would say that people attracted to violent pornography already have the tendency and chose that style to fit their already present quirks. Chalmers also cites David Berkowitz's born again status, which was found out to be a false ploy through letters Berkowitz traded with another killer years after his "conversion".

This book could have been very powerful had Chalmers employed a little skepticism in dealing with these criminals instead of readily jumping on the "blame everything else" bandwagon and not inserted "commercials" for his website and other book at the end of EVERY chapter.

I would have given this book 2 stars because I felt that his inclusion of international teen violence was very enlightening, however, he lost the second star by (1) continuing the myth of Columbine killers Klebold and Harris as bullied outcasts though it's been "proven" that they were not and (2) misrepresenting the power of firearms in the Tulloch and Parker case. Yes, it was a big deterrent that the first attempted victim brandished a gun, however it was truly that attempted victim's alertness to his environment, his dog and his COMMON SENSE that allowed him to recognize the danger of the situation. Guns are only a good idea when the person holding them has the training and good sense to utilize them properly.

To Mr. Chalmers: You recognize that guns don't kill people and aren't inherently bad. The same is true of pornography, graphic games and movies. We need to spend more time figuring out how to help kids that use such items to feed an already present perversion and not trying to censor or blame the world.

If you really want to find out more about the psychology of teen killers try Savage Spawn by Johnathan Kellerman or any of Kathrine Ramsland's books dissecting crime motivations. Dave Cullen's Columbine is also a great in depth study of what went wrong there.

A must read for anyone who lives in today's society  May 1, 2009
Phil has gone where no one else has. He allows the teen killers to speak to you and tell why they committed these heinous crimes. We all need to read, learn and apply what Phil teaches in this book. As a crisis center mental health social worker, I have come face to face with teens who say they want to kill someone. They are void inside and exist for only one reason,to kill, most likely so they can feel something/anything again. Evil has many disguises, innocent looking children now being one of them. Phil tells us what we need to hear. We can no longer look the other way when it comes it our societies kids. Because now they are coming to our malls with guns...We need to pull our heads out of the sand, swallow our pride and admit that we have made mistakes and this current generation is proof of that. Can you afford not to listen to Phil's expert advice? Our children are our legacy; this is not a legacy that we should be proud of..but with Phil's experience, advice, and as passionate advocate for our children, he has earned our respect and we can not afford to ignore what he has to share with us. It will take us all to change this trend, but Phil give us what we need to do so. Read, learn and apply what you learn in this book; we will all be better and safer for it.
