Item description for By My Own Reckoning by Cecil E. Sherman...
Overview By My Own Reckoning is Cecil Sherman's gift of memory to those whose lives he has touched through his many years of ministry and service. In this much-anticipated autobiography, Dr. Sherman reflects on his life as a pastor, as a husband and father, and as a key figure in the SBC political controversy of the 1980s. More importantly, Sherman shares with readers the intimate history of his life and ministry, from his origins as the descendent of preachers and farmers, to his pastoral years, and ultimately to the tender love story of caring for his wife, Dot, as she fades into the haze of Alzheimer's disease. Writing in the same astute, conversational style that has endeared him to so many readers of Formations commentary, Dr. Sherman has given voice to memories of family, Baptist history, and lifelong ministry that should not be forgotten. This book chronicles the life of a man who has championed intellectual inquiry, freedom of the local congregation, the responsibility of individual, and independent spirituality. A longtime pastor for remarkable congregations, Dr. Sherman has written the biblical commentary for the Formations Sunday School curriculum for over 17 years. After distinctive pastorates, Dr. Sherman served as the first coordinator of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Since retirement in 1997 he has taught at the Baptist Theological Seminary at Richmond. Cecil Sherman's legacy of fortitude, independence, and spirituality continues through his students who study for future ministries worldwide.

Sherman tells it from the trenches Jun 3, 2009
Cecil Sherman provides a record from the trenches of the Southern Baptist Battles of the last quarter of the twentieth century. His writing is filled with previously unreported details of how we came to the places where Baptists are today.
His book is also a touching story of his care for his wife as she faced Alzheimer's Disease. It would be an important record for those who may face this with a family member.
Reflections on a Remarkable Life Aug 20, 2008
Cecil Sherman has been one of the key leaders in Baptist life in the last thirty years. He writes the story of his life, not out of a sense of self-importance, but rather at the urging of those who know that he has been at the heart of one of the most important religious stories of our time. Against the tides of disintegration, Cecil Sherman fought to preserve what was best in the Baptist tradition. In these pages he has recorded the story of his involvement and has also revealed remarkable pastoral instincts.
His prose is clean and crisp, his insight keen and clear. In these pages, as in life, Cecil Sherman is real. Here he shares powerful stories that affect all those who live and work in the Baptist tradition and the larger Christian world. While this book is far more than the story of the take-over and dismantling of the Southern Baptist Convention, this is clearly one of the few really perceptive accounts of that debacle that has been written.
