So, how do you handle stress? That's a question you will be asking yourself as you read this book. When do you walk away from a bad situation and when do you dig your heels into the ground, push up your sleeves, and hit it straight on with everything you've got? What if you can't walk away? What if you want to kick your own ass for making a big mess of your life? Bushpig is a story about a couple who purchases an historic house to renovate while they're in the midst of coping with several personal issues. Somehow they believe that it will be the common ground that repairs their crumbling relationship. As the story unfolds, not only does the couple manage the enormous task of remodeling a house that should've been demolished, they also have financial difficulties, marriage troubles, neighbor problems, and they are dealing with the death of a family member. As a result, their lives are turned upside down with stress and grief. They get to the point of madness at times, trying to handle everything that they've brought onto themselves. So sit back and allow yourself to imagine being in the same situation. How much self control could you have in similar conditions? How close to the edge can you be pushed?

I was impressed with the book, which was suggested by my friend Donna M. The book was a little hard to get into, and I almost felt like it needed MORE descriptions. But on the whole, a good story. I would have liked to have seen Gladys go even crazier and I kept expecting a more physical altercation. Pushing, shoving, guns, whatnot. Or maybe Jerry and Susanne could have found an interesting revenge on the crazy neighbors. But I enjoyed the book, and read it pretty much straight through once I had time to sit down. I expect more from Carol Preston in the near future. I will definitely keep looking for her next work.
It really pulls you in.. Aug 26, 2007
Bushpig rings true. Carol Preston accomplishes what a novelist is supposed to: She tells a story that is interesting. One might think that a story which is primarily about the many setbacks with rehabbing an old house, and which focuses a lot on dealings with a troublesome neighbor might be boring. But this story is anything but. It is so observant--the descriptions of events, people, and their thoughts and feelings--that the reader is easily transported into the main character's (Suzanne) shoes. All of Suzanne's feelings in dealing with a really crazy and entertaining hell of a neighbor are shared: the rage, shock, confusion, disbelief, guilt, hatred, compassion, curiosity, and amusement all make this a very entertaining story.
Not only does it feel authentic, it is easy reading--that is, the reader doesn't get bogged down in pretension or too much pscyhoanalysis. The book is appropriately named, as the neighbor really steals the show. However, in the process the reader comes to appreciate not only how much nonsense Suzanne and her husband had to deal with, but how they pulled together to overcome great odds stacked against them without literally losing their own minds!
While there is a definite message of perseverance in the face of tremendous obscurity and obstacles, I really just enjoyed the story and how it was told. Preston quite simply has a gift for being extremely observant of both people and things, and then being able to weave her observations into a story which is believable and entertaining.
I hope this first effort is nowhere near her last.
