Overview Provides parents instructions to help educate their children, covering reading, writing, math, science, and social studies for sixth graders.
Publishers Description This brand-new and important workbook gives parents easy-to-apply methods for educating their sixth-grade children, whether as home schoolers with parents taking full control of their childA's studies, or as parents cooperating with their childA's teachers in standard classroom settings. The book gives parents guiding principles for teaching reading, writing, math, social studies, and science. Pages are perforated for multipurpose use, which can include independent learning by children or shared learning when kids and parents work together. Four curriculum sections are designed to guide teaching parents: Promoting literacyA-reading, writing, listening, and speaking . . . MathA-number patterns, problem solving, and other math-related concepts . . . ScienceA-life, earth, and physical sciences . . . and Social StudiesA-history, geography, economics, and culture. Each section outlines subject matter for children to learn, preceded by planning and implementation strategies for parents. Parents get advice on ways to enhance the childA's learning experience. They include Teaching Tips, or ways to explain difficult concepts to children, and ways to assess a childA's success in grasping the given material. There is also advice on integrating the Arts, with suggestions for interactive learning in music and art; and activities and Games to promote hands-on learning experiences that relate to specific subject content. In each subject section a special feature titled In Your Community describes ways to explore the community where the family lives, taking advantage of local cultural affairs, business activities, environmental concerns, and government functions. Though the book is written primarily for parents, sixth-grade classroom teachers looking for new ideas and methods will also find inspiration. This book is one of three titles that introduce teaching methods and offer practical curriculum guides for different grade levels: grades three, five, and six. Additional titles for other KA-6 grades are currently in preparation. All books feature maps, photos, and illustrations, many in color.

Reviews - What do customers think about Making the Grade: Everything Your Sixth Grader Needs to Know?
home schoolers beware Aug 2, 2007
I bought this book to help me study for the Praxis exam. While I found all the information helpful, it was very general. Social studies section was great. Science could have given an answer guide when labeling parts of the flower but overall, science was great too. As far as the time zones, I agree with the first review in that they needed to include a map. Overall, I would recommend purchasing it if you have a sixth grader and want to review.
HOWEVER, if you are relying on this book to teach a child and you are not skilled in the area of math, I want to warn you that there are several errors in the math section. And I do mean SEVERAL!!! Some answers have more than one answer and you may mark the child wrong. Also, the calculations for fractions were horrible. It showed step by step how to calculate the answer and then all of a sudden, there was a typographical error and the original fraction changed. This book should have been proofread by a math major!!! If you are using it to study for an exam and at one point in time but "forgot", you will figure out the errors and keep going. However, it bothered me that this book had so many errors in math and was able to out there.
Great Book for Struggling 6th Graders! Nov 23, 2004
I was bad in math, kind of bad in reading. I did some of this book and it's great, but the reason I didn't give this 5 stars is because in the 'Math' section, the formulas aren't that good and not just that, and some things are not include. But the biggest flaw is when they say what time is it in another place and they don't give a map to tell you! You have to look on the Internet for fricken' 2 hours to find all that!
But a good book, get it if you're struggling in math, and/or science, and/or language arts, and/or science, and/or social studies, and/or other stuff.
