Item description for Justice: A Biblical Perspective by Carol J. Dempsey...

Overview
Focusing on concepts and themes as they relate to the comprehensive view of justice contained in the Old and New Testaments, Justice: A Biblical Perspective brings together various passages to give the historical and literary context. Dempsey sets a clear definition of justice and its relationship to compassion, two virtues that lead to liberation. While drawing readers' attention to the dilemma of justice and violence, Dempsey also introduces readers to an understanding of how the ancient Israelite and early Christian cultures and worldviews influenced the shaping of the Old and New Testaments, and how contemporary readers must appropriate biblical literature in relation to the contemporary global, religious, and social contexts in which the texts are now heard. Justice also emphasizes how the Bible can provide a view of justice for all creation on earth-both human and nonhuman.

Reviews - What do customers think about Justice: A Biblical Perspective?

A cultural discussion on justice  Dec 15, 2008
Dempsey's book wrestles with justice using the biblical text as a basis for illustration and discussion. One objective is to support the idea that any attempt to arrest injustice with violence is not fruitful. Examples of violence meted out to stop or judge injustice are provided at the beginning of the book, the principle of lex talonis and the Exodus plague narratives, for example are highlighted. Against that backdrop a call for an internal spirit of justice that embraces all biological life is issued. Biblical instances relating to the vulnerable of the earth (women, children, slaves and animals) are then discussed with a discussion on compassion and peace toward the end.

Dempsey does raise key issues about justice and includes the Old Testament and the New Testament as well as the Apocrypha in her discussion. She is well versed in the prophets and places great emphasis on those voices. Understandably the scope of the book is limited but little attention is given to the ancient Near Eastern background (Hammurabi's code is mentioned) and much of the biblical data is understood as a construct that, at best, presents cultural and religious attitudes of "the day" (accepting a majority scholarly opinion for the dating of "the day"). The book is a statement about selected biblical material (relating to justice or injustice) that seeks to provide readers of the Bible an opportunity to reflect in light of today's current struggles with justice. Those who agree with Dempsey's presuppositions will probably affirm the book but since it is mostly descriptive, in my opinion, there is little that would actually motivate individuals to do justice, especially those who care little for the biblical ethic.
