Very Good for Mexican Song Lyrics  May 16, 2002
I've found this book very useful in looking for lyrics for my Spanish-language CDs, especially the standards written before 1975. Even though its title means "The Most Famous Songs," it could be called "The Most Famous Mexican Songs -- And a Few Others." It's great for boleros, rancheras, huapangos, and even some children's songs. But it gives short shrift to the rest of Latin American. For example, only one song by Ernesto Lecuona (Siboney, of course)! If you are looking for contemporary Latin lyrics, forget it. There is no salsa and virtually no merenque, cumbia, no lyrics for Ricky Martin and Shakira songs. But, if you want lyrics from the Golden Age of Mexican Music, this is your book. Also, the index is not very good. Beware of the index that lists composers by nationality. It's a mess! There are some real howlers. Violeta Parra is listed as Argentine, not Chilean. Myrta Silva, Venezuelan instead of Puerto Rican. In a few cases, the composers are wrong or their names are misspelled. For example, "La ultima noche" is by Bobby Collazo, NOT Bobby Capo.

totally exasperated - lyrics only - letras sin melodia  Mar 31, 2000
Letras sin melodias - There are only lyrics and a few chord symbols in this book - no melody line. I thought I was getting a book of songs. It is only a book of lyrics. I feel the title is deceptive, since mere chord symbols really do not amount to an "acompanamiento".
