Item description for Yoshitaka Amano by Yoshitaka Amano, Carlo McCormick & Rachel Kushner...
A superluminary in the world of Japanese manga, anime and video games, Yoshitaka Amano has recently turned to sumi-e, a 700-year-old practice of monochrome ink painting that, until now, has had a rigid set of leitmotifs. Not so in Amano's contemporary hands, which pinpoint body parts from the world of Princess Mononoke and Akira and render them in wordless detail.

Eyes Jun 19, 2006
This is mostly a collection of studies of eyes done by Amano using brush and ink. I was personally interested because I am trying to teach myself sumie style painting and I'm fan of all of Amano's work. This book is not great if you just want to see a variety of colorful pretty pictures, for that try "The Complete Prints" but if you are interested in sumie then this book offers a some cool ideas on how it can be implemented.
very cool sketch book Feb 21, 2006
When I first got this book I was a little pissed. I spent fifty-something bucks on a bunch of paintings of eyes.
Then, as I read it through a second time, it actually had some great value to me as an artist. There are tons of studies of different characters, body parts, and other artwork. I love Amano's work and it's great to see where he gets started.
If you're looking for a book of finished artwork, you want the cheaper book of prints. But if you're an artist or game designer like me, this book can be a good addition to your character design references.
