Item description for That All May Believe: A Theology of the Gospel and the Mission of the Church by Carl E. Braaten...

Overview
That All May Believe brings an evangelical catholic theological perspective to bear on controversial issues having to do with the truth of the gospel, the ecumenical quest for church unity, and the encounter of Christianity with other world religions. Here Carl Braaten argues and demonstrates that a theology may be evangelical without being Protestant, catholic without being Roman, and orthodox without being Eastern. Written from a Lutheran perspective, it is nonetheless a work postdenominational in scope and substance. In sharp contrast to the older style of doing theology to bolster a particular denominational tradition or the newer style that revises the Christian faith to conform to modern culture, the ecumenical orthodoxy that emerges here does theology out of the common biblical and creedal mainstream of the Christian tradition. Braaten focuses on the core of Christianity - faith in Jesus Christ according to the scriptures. He applies the criterion of Christ to many questions of Christian theology today, pointing the way to a more complete and foundational theology for every modern Christian.

Reviews - What do customers think about That All May Believe: A Theology of the Gospel and the Mission of the Church?

The Fall of Lutheranism in America  Feb 10, 2010
Carl Braaten, perhaps the foremost Lutheran theologian of this generation, takes a hard look at what it means to follow the dictates and challenges of Scripture as enunciated by Luther and the other giants of the Reformation. He points out that American Lutheranism, of whatever denomination, has fallen far short of what Luther and his contemporaries envisioned when they began the Reformation of the church universal. Most of the mainline denominations have 'sold out' to the pagan culture that is America and the Western World and he renews the challenge of what it takes to be a Christian. A fascinating book that challenges everyone.

Good collection of Essays.  Nov 4, 2009
Professor Braaten has helped Me a lot in the past with his writings, and this book is no exception to that. He is a very good writer and very clear and to the point. He is a Theologian who has seen it all, academically speaking, it seems to Me. The essay on Paul Tillich is very good. Tillich's point of the protestant principle also applyiing to our doubts, is a much needed insight. Accept that you are accepted. Thats Gospel to these ears! Also good is the essay on the "Resurrection". He covers a lot of ground in the academic history and debate on this crucial part of Christianity, but his overview, is full of great insightful points. He is to be thanked for his work. In fact I am going to write him a personal letter later today and do just that. Take care. Richard, Bradford PA
