Item description for The Strange New Word of the Gospel: Re-Evangelizing in the Postmodern World by Carl E. Braaten & Robert W. Jenson...

Overview
In today's postmodern culture many people are turning to religion, but they are not necessarily finding their way back to the church. Most believers in America and other Western countries are "post-Christian." Though baptized and brought up in a church, they no longer believe and practice the Christian faith. In such a time, the great challenge facing the church is re-evangelization. This volume provides serious theological reflection on Christian mission within postmodern, post-Christian culture. Written by respected scholars representing the Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox traditions, these chapters point out elements of the gospel that will help the church speak effectively to contemporary society, particularly in the United States.

Publishers Description
In today's postmodern culture many people are turning to religion, but they are not necessarily finding their way back to the church. Most unbelievers in America and other Western countries are "post-Christians." Though baptized and brought up in a church, they no longer believe and practice the Christian faith. In such a time, the great challenge facing the church is re-evangelization. This volume provides serious theological reflection on Christian missions within postmodern, post-Christian culture. Written by respected scholars representing the Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox traditions, these chapters point out elements of the gospel that will help the church speak effectively to contemporary society, particularly in the United States. Suggesting startling approaches to Christian proclamation, this volume shows how "the strange new word" of the gospel can reawaken faith in the postmodern world.

Reviews - What do customers think about Strange New Word of the Gospel: Re-Evangelizing In The Postmodern World?

A must read-especially for Lutherans!  Dec 15, 2006
This book is a must-read for anyone interested in the future of the church! If you view post-modernism as a threat to Christianity, and would rather keep your head in the sand, than engaging the movement, this is not the book for you. While I have not finished it yet, there are thus far two excellent essays. One is by David Schindler, and the other is by Philip Turner; both I think are critical for understanding our current culture as well as our (LCMS) sacramental practice--or reductionism! This book should be read along with James K.A. Smith's excellent work, Who's Afraid of Postmodernism?

But...don't read either book if your comfortable being walled up in your church and disengaged with society-or the sacramental practice of the church.
