Childishly naive cumulativism Jun 23, 2009
This book is pathetic. Kordig takes his own dogmas for absolute truth and faults the anti-cumulativists for disagreeing with them. So for example it is asserted without a trace of an argument as if it were a truism that "to maintain that reports of observations are neither true nor false ... is tantamount to denying that science is an empirical and cognitive enterprise" (p. 26). Obviously the anti-cumulativists that Kordig is attacking would maintain that all that is required for science to be "an empirical and cognitive enterprise" is that observation reports have truth value *relative to theories*, not in isolation. Kordig does nothing at all to refute or even engage with this obvious suggestion. Here as elsewhere he simply asserts the assumptions of his own view, finds them inconsistent with those of the anti-cumulativists, and then infers that the latter are mistaken.
