Item description for Coyote Staircase by F. Button C....
It began with a secret... Deep in the historic homeland of the Nez Perce tribe in eastern Oregon, a hidden mine is about to be opened. When stolen mine equipment is found wrecked nearby with a boot - and a foot - amidst the destruction, no one is certain who to blame. One thing is certain: Tom Kreuger's job just got more complicated. ... and became a search for justice. BLM Biologist Tom Kreuger came to Joseph Canyon to protect a wildlife area. What he finds are squabbling, would-be miners and a Nez Perce family divided by alcoholism, the desire for development profits, and tribal history preservation. As Kreuger probes for answers, he learns that "justice" has many meanings.

Reviews - What do customers think about Coyote Staircase?
Kind of a lame coyote Apr 27, 2008
As a retired field biologist, I looked forward to reading Coyote Staircase, but was disappointed by the writing style and lack of action and mystery. Button succeeds at depicting a day in the life of a wildlife biologist, and his characters' conversations capture their jocular comaraderie. However, the story plods along with not much developing, and when it does, t'aint no big surprise. Go read one of Nevada Barr's better novels, and don't waste your time with Button.
Excellent, quick read. Jan 14, 2008
It took me a few chapters to really get into Coyote Staircase, but after that it was tough to put down for very long. Of course, now I want to hear about the murder in Owyhee County (but that takes you away from Baker and the "mix" of characters that I've come to know).
Coyote Staircase is not a "hunt for clues to solve the crime" type of mystery, it is a story that asks questions, drops clues, and gives you just enough of the answer to keep you turning the pages. In addition to the entertaining plot twists, the book offers up Tom's knowledge base with just enough interesting information to pique the reader's lust to learn more. Just like Tom, I now have a few more books on my reading list ... I may just have to read this one again.
Coyote Staircase is the third book by Button, all featuring Tom Kreuger. Can't wait for the next one!!!!
