From Publishers Weekly
Wilsons sizable collection of successful childrens and young adult books (including The Courtship and Leaving) is one book richer with this release, which provides the authorized backstory to L. M. Montgomerys classic character, Anne of Green Gables. Set in Nova Scotia, the book follows Anne through a string of foster homes full of diapers, dirty dishes, screaming children and endless chores. Orphaned at three months by her schoolteacher parents, she searches for knowledge and love in the chaotic, grueling, unpredictable world she inhabits. Every time Anne is on the brink of finding happiness its taken away from her, though by the time shes 11 and living with her second (but not last) foster family, the Hammonds, it appears as if Annes life might be calming down. But after a tragic turn of events, her future is uncertain yet again. Although a little long, the book is a quick read that will keep the reader invested in its compelling characters from start to finish. (Feb.) Copyright 2008 Reed Business Information.

Reviews - What do customers think about Before Green Gables?

Review of Before Green Gables  Apr 30, 2010
I grew up with Anne of Green Gables. As a pre-teen I yearned for my own bosom friend like Diana, I wanted to taste raspberry cordial (although not get sick), I wanted to walk through a forest and quote poetry. I even wanted red hair, although Anne with an E would say that hers was the bane of her existence. More than once I would find myself in the depths of despair and I can remember thinking at those times that yes, my life was a perfect graveyard of buried hopes.

So to say that I was cautious as I approached this book would be an understatement. Honestly, it was the cover that tipped the scale for me, I couldn't resist it. It's a beautiful, fantastic cover and so tastefully done I decided to give the story a shot.

My first impression was.. how dreary. I mean, Anne's life before Green Gables was not fun and games so I wasn't surprised by how bleak the story is - on the surface. But then I started to pay attention. Budge Wilson did a fantastic job of bringing out the bright spots, a teacher here, the touch of a hand to Anne's shoulder in encouragement there. There were reasonable explanations for the development of many of Anne's quirks - how she learned to use Ipecac, where she came up with many of the long words she arrived at Green Gables with, her friend in the glass, etc. Although the circumstances Anne grew up in were dreary and bleak, the character that L.M. Montgomery created was so full of light, so bright and wonderful and beautiful, that even the bleak surroundings in this book couldn't dull it. And Wilson did a fantastic job of portraying Anne as a young child as Montgomery's Anne... with an E.

I highly recommend this book. It surprised me and I think it's the first novel spin-off of a favorite classic that I can truly appreciate and love on its own merit.

Incredible!  Apr 8, 2010
This book is incredible. I cannot express, through a book review, the wonder of it. It has all the qualities of an excellent book: an exciting story, emotion, description... the book, "Anne of Green Gables," explains her past childhood in about 3 sentences, and Budge Wilson has written 400 pages from those words. The characters are extraordinarily convincing and well-drawn - Walter and Bertha Shirley are such kind and lovable people that I cried when they died. The parts she made up were so imaginative and creative! Everyone should read this book.

a good read, even for a true "Anne" fan  Feb 22, 2010
I'm one of those "Anne" fans that has read everything that there is by L.M. Montgomery. Last year, I found this book and was very leary of reading it. But, I was actually surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Of course, it is not by Maud, but I really feel that it does fit in along nicely with the details that we know of Anne's life prior to P.E.I. Many readers see it as very dismal, but I saw hope in every situation that Anne went through. I really liked the characters that Wilson gave to encourage and care for Anne as she went along in life. Instead of a life of hopelessness, she seemed to always have some ray of hope through people that loved her and shaped her into the person that she became. I would highly encourage everyone to read the other true "Anne" books first, but what fun it was to find another book about Anne and I'm sure many others will have a sweet time reading it as I did.

a must have  Jan 28, 2010
I bought the book for my granddaughter"s 12th birthday. I thought it was a good start to read Before Green Gables first. I am in hopes she will let me read it when she finnishes.

A Wonderful Trip Down Memory Lane  Jan 21, 2010
Finally the story is told in detail of the life Anne had before coming to live with the Cuthberts. There is also a little bit about her parents and their lives. Anne is truly a girl who takes a lot but never gives up dreaming. Her parents die when she is 3 months old, and she is taken in by the lady who helped clean the house for Bertha. That is just the beginning of a long journey for an eleven year old girl.

Ms. Wilson did such a fantastic job that I felt apart of the story. I could feel the emotions and sometimes even cried along with Anne. She not only grabbed the essence of L.M. Montgomery's work but was able to write stuff that as far as I know never been written in detail before.

I love Anne. My favorite fictional character of all time who gave me a passion to dream myself. Her imagination was one of the things that kept her going. Also her tenacity for life kept her going no matter how difficult. She did break down but after all even she can only take so much. Her hopes were dashed and the depths of despair were something she experienced with all of her heart. Sometimes it seemed like she was just being melodramatic but I kept hoping for the best anyways.

This is one book that won't leave my shelf any time soon. I recommend it highly for anyone who loves Anne and I enjoyed it so much. Some of this was in the movie with the Hammonds and going to the orphanage. I am curious to brush off my copy of Anne of Green Gables if it's still in readable condition. I may have to tape it up since I loved it so much! This is one I may revisit when I need something to get me out of a slump.
