Fiction Shelved with Science - Oops! Aug 14, 2007
The general subjects listed for this book are "juvenile nonfiction, animals, marine life" and the photographs are beautiful. I purchased it for my elementary school library thinking it appropriate for the science shelf. Upon receipt, however, I was disappointed to realize that the book is a religion-based promotion of Intelligent Design and contains a lot of non-factual information (for ex., "Some of the animals in this book appear to be very dangerous to man and other animals around it (sic). These features appear as a result of Adam's rebellion in the Garden of Eden." "After sin, some of the animals became aggressive and started killing one another." ) There is an entire chapter within the book devoted to the religious concept of Intelligent Design, including statements such as "Evolution dissipates into thin air as the complexities of design shine forth." The publisher classifies the book (in very small print on the back cover) as "General Interest / General Topic / Christian Education." This book is NOT non-fiction, should not be presented to readers as factual, and does not belong on a science shelf within any collection.
