Item description for Apostolic Letters of Faith, Hope, and Love: Galatians, 1 Peter, and 1 John by Bruce M. Metzger...
Overview Professor Metzger has been a leader in New Testament studies for the past fifty years, through his teaching, his publications, his text-critical work, and his translation work. This volume brings his deep insight to three key epistles, focusing on three fundamental Christian virtues. "The following pages set forth the teaching from three of the twenty-one letters contained in the New Testament: Galatians, 1 Peter, and 1 John. Each letter presents characteristic emphases of three prominent leaders in the early church: Paul, Peter, and John. Each letter arises out of quite different social and theological backgrounds, and each provides insight into the manner in which the special needs of the recipients of the letter were met. Key words and phrases from each letter are discussed within the context of the occasion that called forth the writing of the letter. At the same time the theological and devotional import of the writer's teaching is related to the Christian life, then and now. A concluding chapter weaves together theological and ethical themes common to the three principal strands of New Testament Christianity. "Faith puts us on the path; hope keeps us walking; and love is what the Christian life is all about."

A Short Summary of Christian Truths Made Practical Jun 26, 2007
Having edited the United Bible Societies Greek New Testament, the Revised Standard Version of the Bible, and the New Revised Standard Version of the Bible, probably few people understand the Biblical texts as well as Dr. Metzger. In this short (best understood as a devotional approach) book published shortly before his death, Bruce Metzger uses three letters by Paul, Peter, and John to teach about faith, hope, and love. His deep scholarly understanding of the Bible comes through, but in ways that any lay person can easily understand and appreciate. Always a careful scholar (providing good footnotes), we are reminded of the difference between a letter and an epistle, the unique ways that these apostles began their letters, and that the grace of God leads to peace with God and the peace of God.
While giving the historical background and context of each letter, Dr. Metzger is completely Christ-centered and Bible-trusting in his presentation of these three letters. Each chapter provides good material for a sermon or a Bible study on each letter that should enable an overall study or presentation of each letter in about an hour (though the book can be read quickly). The topics of faith, hope, and love are essential for any believer to study, and Metzger's interpretation can benefit every Christian regardless of denominational background. In his Preface, Metzger wrote: "Faith puts us on the path; hope keeps us walking; and love is what the Christian life is all about." In his book, there are many nuggets of truth like the quotation above that are worth remembering and quoting. In each of his studies, Metzger relates the Bible to problems believers face today.
What prohibits me from recommending that the book be bought and studied by each person in a Bible study group is what I consider the high price of such a small book. To me, $12.95 would be a better price, but for a serious student of the Bible, $15.00 is just about as high as the publishers could demand for the book. Many will buy the book if they know of Metzger's other work (and they will not be disappointed), but those who do not know of Metzger may be put off by the high price of the book.
This book is a fitting tribute to Dr. Metzger's life and scholarship. Simple and profound for every reader, I highly recommend it.
