Overview TELL THE KING AND THE PEOPLE: ISRAEL SHALL BE RESTORED TO THE LAND ... FOR A SEASON. The angel s words reverberated in Jonah s mind as he set his face south toward Samaria. In Ben Amittai: First Call, recounting Scripture s first mention of Israel s most memorable prophet (2 Kings 14:25), author Bruce Judisch takes Jonah, son of Amittai Ben Avram, a tanner from Gath-hepher, and his friend and protector, Elihu, on a tumultuous journey from Galilee to Samaria with God s message of deliverance to the court of King Jeroboam II. Years of agonizing silence had followed the angel s first startling exhortation to Jonah: PREPARE YOURSELF . Even after his beloved mother s revelation of their family s life-changing encounter with the great prophet Elisha, Jonah had grown weary, believing Adonai had revoked the tanner s call to prophecy. But nothing could be farther from the truth ... Ben Amittai: First Call traces the first faltering steps of the prophet history remembers most for rebelling against God s call to preach salvation to the people of Nineveh. But, as is often true of a divine calling, a period of preparation and a test of faith must come first.

Reviews - What do customers think about Ben Amittai?
Thoroughly enjoyable Aug 19, 2008
Really enjoyed Ben Amittai. It's the best contemporary Biblical fiction I've seen. A minor character, Johnah Ben Amittai's sister-in-law, provided a comic interlude when she tried to interpret his call from God. Also especially liked the portrayal of King Jeroboam and Jonah's interaction with the Royal Court of Israel. Try it, you'll like it.
Adventure in Ancient Israel Aug 5, 2008
In a harrowing, insightful adventure, Bruce Judisch brings to life the minor prophet Jonah ben Amittai.
Israel in the 8th Century B.C. is beset by enemies both internally and externally. Wars have taken their toll of the people and its manhood. Jonah's call brings nothing but consternation to the tanner of Gath-hepher. He is called, but he doesn't know what that means and he doesn't know what God wants from him.
Mr. Judisch lets you live with Jonah ben Amittai and his family. You know his fear and the indecision that turns suddenly to decision when God fully reveals his message to the unwilling prophet. Wrapped in this grand tale is a path of friendship, action, adventure, and the opening of doors that allows Jonah to bring the message of God finally to the right person--the person who can make a difference in Isreal.
This is a novel that will touch and encourage you. Mr. Judisch's clear description and character development builds an exciting tale to show how God works in the world and how in spite of ourselves, He makes His will be done.
I'm looking forward to the next book hinted at the end of First Call.
A great beginning Feb 22, 2008
Bruce Judisch starts his series about the prophet Jonah with a bang. It's apparent that Mr. Judisch has spent much time studying and befriending Jonah and reconstructing a likely history for him based on the hints dropped in scripture. Jonah comes alive in the pages of Ben Amittai. Can't wait for the rest of the series!
A Fascinating Adventure You Might Not Expect! Feb 20, 2008
BEN AMITTAI by Bruce Judisch is a Christian novella in the historical fiction realm. The book is based upon the early years of the Prophet Jonah and addresses his calling from God and his journey to carry God's message to King Jeroboam II. The book is a short read at 138 pages, but is engaging, especially if you enjoy historical fiction centered around biblical events. Mr. Judisch is an excellent writer and his prose is very fluid. I personally wouldn't be surprised to find that Mr. Judisch has written other works even if they remain unpublished. The story isn't quite a "thriller" in style but there is some action and quite a bit of character development to people like Jonah we hear little about, other than the biblical account of his brief incarceration inside the belly of a whale. Also of interest is the fact that Mr. Judisch is donating the majority of proceeds from the book to the support of missionary efforts; claiming to keep only that necessary to cover his personal costs for the book itself....bravo!
Excellent Book Jun 24, 2007
I was very impressed with the authors ability to paint the picture of the surroundings. He gave vivid details and many times I felt as if I were standing in the scene living the story. The story itself is interesting and the scene where Ben Amittae stands before the King was captivating. Outstanding book and one I would recommend to all my friends.
