Item description for Holman Illustrated Pocket Bible Handbook by Broadman & Holman...
Overview In their groundbreaking book, 7 Keys to Comprehension, Susan Zimmerman and Chryse Hutchins cite background knowledge as one of the seven essentials to understanding what one reads. ?Background knowledge is like Velcro. It helps new information adhere. The more background knowledge you develop and use, the more you can make sense of and remember new information.? Truth be told, a lot of Bible reading fails to adhere. One of the factors in this failure to comprehend and remember is lack of background knowledge.
Bible handbooks are a good source of background information that helps the reader to connect with the biblical text in a memorable and life-transforming way. The Holman Illustrated Pocket Bible Handbook is an ideal companion for the person who?s just beginning to read and study the Bible. Too much background information can be overwhelming. But the right amount of information in an attractive format can begin building Bible comprehension in the same way a manageable weight load can build muscle.
Here is a Bible reference book that can be easily carried along with one?s Bible to class, to Sunday School, and to weekday Bible studies and provide on-the-spot background information that will illuminate the Bible passage under discussion.

Reviews - What do customers think about Holman Illustrated Pocket Bible Handbook?
Great Compact resource May 26, 2009
I carry it in my car along with a spare Bible and a pocket concordance. It has happened to me that God send divine appointments and it is necessary to have these resources available to share the Gospel anywhere. I love the size and the quality of this dictionary. Color illustrations and a fairly decent letter size meets the needs for a portable dictionary. Needless to say, it is very concise but just enough to solve the most basic questions. I also carry a magnifier with these resources, just in case.
It's like Cliff notes for your Bible. Mar 24, 2009

Not that it's bad, but you can get it in the HCSB illustrated Bible May 14, 2008
Everything that's in this little book can be found in the HCSB Illustrated Study Bible. All of the info, maps, etc... are all present in the HCSB Illustrated Study Bible. May as well spend a few more $$ and have a bigger book that's easier to read & easily referenced in the Bible right at your fingertips. This is really a double dip on the part of Holman Publishers. There's nothing new in this book that hasn't already been printed in the HCSB Illustrated Study Bible.
Holman Illustrated Pocket Bible Handbook Oct 18, 2007
This handbook was somewhat disappointing. I would classify it as very, no extremely primary, or "how to tour the Bible in one day". I have read Halleys Handbook which is by far superior. I guess I was mislead by the title as there are more than one important verses or scriptures in each book of the Bible. It reminds me that "no words shall be taken away" proves this a very inferior product. I ordered several as gifts, but don't know anyone juvenile enough to give them to.
