Bridges teaches how to practice godliness May 25, 2010
An excellent resource on the study of godliness, Jerry Bridges' "The Practice of Godliness" was reprinted in 2008 and has sold over 600,000 copies. As Bridges points out, very few books and Bible studies are written on godliness. In a time when the world is telling us to focus inwardly at our own wants and needs and become our own god, we need to hear someone tell us it's not about us and that it's all about God. What pleases God is for us to praise Him for who He is and then seek to become as much like Him as we can. A sequel to "The Pursuit of Holiness" which discussed putting off the old self, "The Practice of Godliness" is about putting on the new self. Each of the eighteen chapters teaches how to grow in godliness and how to be God-centered rather than self-centered. As in all of his books, Bridges doesn't feed you fluff that is here today and gone tomorrow. He delves into the hard stuff with in-depth explanations and definitions along with Scripture to back up what he's saying and to help you develop a godly character. A twelve-lesson Study Guide is also available which is beneficial to get the most out of your reading and study so that you can apply what you learn to your Christian walk. If you want to learn how to follow Christ, fear God and love others, read this book. This book will encourage you, but it will also convict you. Bridges asks you to take a look at yourself and see yourself through God's eyes. Will God be proud of who you are? Will He see you progressing to become more like Christ? Will He applaud your efforts? Or, will He be disgusted by your attitudes and actions? Will He see someone too proud to change? Will He see someone too stubborn to make an effort? God loves you because you are His child. He will always love you. The person who loves God is the one who is obedient to His commands. Do you love Him enough to become the person He created you to be? Read "The Practice of Godliness" and let Bridges show you how to turn your life around to one that pleases God. Practice of Godliness May 19, 2010
My Take: I think that with most Christians nowadays (myself included until recently) we think that as long as we are attending every church service going to all the programs that the church has to offer that we are doing what we should be doing. I have noticed that alot of Christians are doing that but they feel like something is missing. This book address that issue very well.
Mr. Bridges says in this book that the crucial characteristic of our growth in godly devotion is to have a balanced approach to all three essential elements of devotion: fear, love and desire.
He talks quite a bit about having a fear of God. I think that this has been lost in todays Christian world. We have been brought up with the images of God as fatherly and that He is someone that we can come to with anything which is true but we also need to have a fear of Him.
Mr Bridges uses the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians 5 as characteristics that we need to strive for so we can practice Godliness.
The set that I received from Navpress for review contained the book, a study guide and blank cards to write verses on . The study guide helps the reader to hone in on what Mr. Bridges has said in the chapters and to apply the material to their personal lives.
I feel that this book has helped me to grow.
I received a copy of the book and the study guide for review from Navpress and am not reguired to offer a postitive reveiw.
I loved it! May 16, 2010
I received this book free from Navpress's blogger program and I am happy to say that it was a refreshing read. I am so tired of people interpreting the Bible to what they want. Jerry Bridges did an outstanding job with this book. Basically the books whole meaning is to teach you how to have a godly life with God that would make Him proud. It teaches you devotion to God which everyone needs to have and it gives a practical approach to having a wonderful relationship with God. I enjoyed this book very much. 5 stars.

A Must Read for all Believers May 6, 2010
The Practice of Godliness is a wonderful book for any believer to read; and re-read. However, when used hand-in-hand with the Discussion Guide, it makes this book even better. If that is possible!
A lot of books these days come with discussion guides built in or on the side, but this duo takes a different twist on the use of such a guide. This is designed to do the discussion guide first and then read the book. While this seems backward at first, it actually aids in the learning. You study the scriptures first, then read the author's teaching, then follow up with questions to discuss, or simply think about if you are doing the study alone. This approach grounds the study more in God's Word than any other I have read.
The study as a whole - with or without the use of the Discussion Guide - is wonderful. It addresses deep theology and biblical truth in a very down-to-earth manner that is easy to understand while challenge our spiritual growth. The Practice of Godliness also takes it from mere thought to application as you study 12 character traits of godliness through out this book.
This is a a great study for Sr. High teens to adults. It is easy to use as an individual and set up to make a great group study as well. * * * * * This review copy was provided courtesy of NavPress.
an excellent book May 5, 2010
The Practice of Godliness is an excellent book by Jerry Bridges. It is a re-release of his sequel to the first book, The Pursuit of Holiness. In this book he addresses areas to grow in, "to put on" the new self and grow in Christian character. Pastor Bridges establishes three core elements (fear of God, love of God, desire for God = devotion to God) and the nature and need for training, and then briefly overviews each of 12 characteristics of God and His followers. Pastor Bridges' book is heavily rooted in the Word but in an easy and flowing writing style. It is a practical exposition, encouraging the reader to apply what is developed. The author correctly focuses on internal heart and mind change in order to impact our outward behaviors - "good fruit can only grow from good roots and proper nourishment." It is not necessary to read these chapters in order; the reader can "skip around" if needed. It would be helpful for the reader to read and study more on the areas of immediate concern. The additional study guide is helpful for further discussion and study. This is an excellent book to read and study through and apply in the life of any believer and follower of Christ.
