Well written historical niche book Feb 23, 2010
This book was a recommendation from an old friend and I enjoyed reading this book very much. Singapore in the fifties and sixties was a time where bucolic kampongs and farms were giving way to increasing urbanization. These were the times that gave way to the fast-paced catalytic transformation of this city state that remains unabated to this day. The declassified RAF survey photos from the sky are of a very high quality (I've used my magnifying glass on the pics quite a few times!), and the text is descriptive and informative. For those of us who still remember a bit of the old Singapore this book is a nostalgic flash back to a forgotten time. I still remember Orchard Road of the old days- the old C. K. Tang building, Cold Storage (where my grandmother fell backwards on the escalator going up to the second floor!), Fritzpatrick's on Scotts with the Tropicana (fabulous dim sum!) across the street. This book is testament to the transformative change and energy in Singapore over the last 50 decades. Well written, well researched. I enjoyed it so much that I do confess it left me wanting for more...!

The book is full of valuable and hard-to-get photos of Singapore in 1950's era. No need to say those who know Singapore at that period of time but those who know Singapore in 1960's and early 1970's may also enjoy the photos and descriptions in the book.
