Reviews - What do customers think about Jake Goes Fishing (I Can Read 2)?
A warm tale Aug 25, 2009
Another in the appealing Jake "I Can Read!" titles, Jake Goes Fishing by Crystal Bowman is a level 2 book.
In this installment, our cute rabbit friend Jake goes fishing with his father. Jake is hopeful they'll have a fish dinner, and is an eager helper, digging up worms and carrying the fishing poles. Jake learns to be quiet on the boat, so he doesn't scare away the fish. He learns not to catch his pants with the hook. And soon, Jake gets a fish on his line. But when the day is over, Jake begins to cry. He looks at the fish in the pail and says he doesn't want to eat them.
Father releases the fish back into the lake and Jake says, "I spoiled everything. Now we won't have a fish supper." Father replies: "You didn't spoil anything, Jake. God gave us a beautiful day. We had lots of fun together. That's the most important thing."
Since they aren't bringing fish home for dinner, Father stops at the grocery store on the way home. Jake picks up some fish crackers saying. At the dinner table, Jake prays: "Thank you, God, for this fun day and for our fish supper."
What I Like: As always, Jake is an appealing character who learns a gentle lesson. My four year old loves these stories, and the warm illustrations by Karen Maizel.
What I Dislike: My daughter loves the idea of fishing, so I was hoping this book would fuel her interest. I was disappointed when Jake cried at the thought of eating the fish, although the author never goes into detail about why he's upset.
Overall Rating: Very good.
