More About B. J. Hoff

BJ Hoff BJ Hoff’s writing is known for her historical settings, her unforgettable characters, and her lyrical prose. She is the bestselling author of numerous historical fiction series, including the Riverhaven Years, the Mountain Song Legacy, the Song of Erin saga, the American Anthem series, and An Emerald Ballad series. Her five-volume Emerald Ballad series was the first major work of fiction to bring the Irish immigration experience to the CBA marketplace, and the work that first brought BJ an international reading audience. Her readers know they can expect to meet some memorable people in her novels and also know that many of those people will be immigrants; Irish immigrants particularly but not exclusively. BJ admits to a passion for building worlds. Whether her characters move about in small country towns or metropolitan areas, reside in Amish settlements, secluded mansions, or coal company houses, she creates communities where people can form relationships, raise families, pursue their faith, and experience the mountains and valleys of life. She’s intent on making her historical novels relevant to the present by developing characters and settings that, while staying true to the history and culture of their times, reflect many of the spiritual trials and social problems faced by contemporary readers. Her novels are meant to be stories that build a bridge from the past to the present. Her literary awards include the Christianity Today’s Critics Choice Book Award for fiction; a Gold Medallion Award finalist; and a number of Excellence in Media Silver Angel awards. Her books have been translated into many foreign languages, and she frequently hears from her international readers in countries such as Ireland, England, Norway, and Germany. A former church music director and music teacher, BJ is a member of the Authors Guild, the Irish American Cultural Institute, and the Appalachian Writers Association. She writes from her home in a small town in east central Ohio. She and her husband share a love of music, books, and time spent with their family: two married daughters, three lively young grandsons, a loopy Golden Retriever, and a cunning, incorrigible but lovable cat.

Reviews - What do customers think about American Anthem?

Discovered a new author!  Apr 28, 2010
I don't think I had read anything by this author before, but I'm sure I'll be looking her books up in the future.
This one was was full of all the things I love - history, romance, suspense and a little mystery. Loved it!
Excellent book!  Feb 11, 2010
American Anthem is a wonderful novel bringing real people of history into a finely wove story that leaves one not wanting to put the book down and yet afraid the end of the book was coming.
I look forward to reading more books by this excellent author
American Anthem not to be missed!  Dec 24, 2009
An unbelievably captivating tale about an Irish governess, two physicians, and an Irish immigrant family. How do they all intertwine and what life changes take place as a result?

How does a blind musician learn to love again? How can the governess of his mother-less daughter learn to trust him? Can a physician learn to overcome a past wrecked with secrets and mysteries? Can love change the motivations of a homeless street performer? Can an Irish mother learn to trust God and love again after tragedy strikes her family? So many life lessons are confronted and learned through three story lines that it becomes near impossible to put the book down until the last page is turned.

A big thank you to Harvest House for placing all three books of the American Anthem trilogy into one 560+ page turning novel, complete with discussion questions at the end. If you are looking for a unique, historical, emotionally-packed experience, this is one book you must read. Spiritual truths are interwoven in each character. You will find yourself in at least one of them!
Another Winner  Jul 10, 2009
Susanna Fallon has just arrived in America, tired, nervous, and wondering what awaits her. She is here to meet the husband of her dead sister, and take care of Caterina, Deirdre's three-year old daughter. Susanna has a pretty good idea of what her brother-in-law is like, but Michael isn't at all what she expects.
Dr. Andrew Carmichael has his own challenge to deal with. Why would a beautiful woman like Bethany Cole want to be a doctor. A lot of his fellow male physicians feel strongly that a woman should be barred from the medical field. Still Andrew can't deny he's very attracted to the lady doctor.
Then there's Renny Magee who is looking forward to a new life in America. Renny is an orphan living on the streets of Ireland, and she's not sure what awaits her in America, but it has to be better whan what she has here.
With just a few words BJ Hoff plunges her readers into a new world of sights and sounds where we feel right at home. Her characters are people we know and love and miss when the book ends. A BJ Hoff book is more than just a book. It's an experience. American Anthem is a treat. One you won't want to miss.
Great Collection!  Jun 25, 2009
I read all of the books in this story when they first came out, and could not put them down! It's wonderful to have them all together in one collection. It's amazing how the author can actually make you able to hear the music in the story, as if you are right there listening to a symphony. These stories will cause you to become absorbed right away into the lives of the characters and their hardships and their joys. This is a treasured saga that you will want to read again and again!
