Publishers Description 2005 Gold Medallion Award finalist When hijacked American Flight 77 slammed into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, LTC (RET) Brian Birdwell was only 15 to 20 yards away. He stepped out into the corridor and was instantly engulfed in flames--burns consumed 60 percent of his body, with almost 40 percent of them third-degree. Thirty-plus operations and countless physical therapy sessions later, his recovery has truly been remarkable, and spiritually he and his family are stronger than ever before. Brian and his wife, Mel, tell their captivating story of God's grace and sovereignty.
From Publishers Weekly Using vivid first-person narration, the Birdwells describe how Brian suffered
second- and third-degree burns over 60% of his body when terrorists crashed a
jet into the Pentagon on September 11, 2001, and how the family's Christian
faith brought it through Brian's recovery. Birdwell spent three months in the
hospital, enduring more than 30 surgeries, daily debridement (removal of
unhealthy tissue) and physical therapy. The account alternates between the
perspectives of husband and wife, and also incorporates the experiences of
their son, Matt. The technique works well throughout; it is most gripping when
Brian faces death alone in a flaming hallway and when Mel scrambles through
gridlocked traffic to get to the hospital. Details set this book apart. The
Birdwells relate Brian's horrific injuries and treatments in a way that might
turn some stomachs (skin coming off with his wedding ring, a staph infection
that covered his body with green pus). They also expose their own
shortcomings: Mel feels guilty about leaving her son and berates some hospital
staffers, while Brian expresses anger toward the terrorists. Such confessions
lend credence to the Birdwells' belief that only a sovereign God could bring
them through their ordeal. This memoir's striking descriptions of the
Birdwells' pain, failures and faith against the backdrop of 9-11 will
fascinate many readers. (July 4) Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.

A very Sincere Couple Oct 20, 2006
Brian is a friend of my son and his family and while visiting with my son, I was fortunate enough to meet Brian and his wife. They are a very loving sincere couple who have had their faith tested and have come out of this stronger than ever. I have recommended this book to others and am giving the books to friend and family because I think it tells a great story of love, devotion and faith.

As Brian and Mel Birdwell share their experiences from the Pentagon attack and aftermath, the reader gets a vivid mental picture of much of what they went through. They share their pain and suffering, but they also share their hope and trust in the Lord which is ultimately what gets them through such an appalling tragedy. God is clearly glorified in this story!

While Brian and Mel Birdwell's story is deeply personal and painful, it is also a story of hope, faith and a deep and abiding love. The courage and commitment of this couple to each other and to God is both humbling and uplifting. Their story makes you wonder about yourself and how you would handle such catastrophic events if they were to come your way. This family is a wonderful picture of God's love and faithfulness.
The Power of Faith Jun 26, 2006
Brian and Mel Birdwell take you with them as together they deal with the severe injuries that Brian received while at the Pentagon on 9/11. There are parts of this book that are difficult to read because of the descriptions of Brian's body as he goes through the healing process. Their story is a powerful testament of faith in a loving God. I would recommend this book to everyone, but especially to someone who is going through physical and spiritual trials.
