Item description for FIRST CALLED: The Reluctant Prophet by Bill McLaughlin...
Overview Why would God choose a 25-year-old automobile mechanic from a small town in Mississippi as His anointed messenger to deliver a mysterious message in New York City? For the same reason He chose to use a 100-year-old man to father a nation, an Egyptian prince to free that nation's slaves, and a shepherd boy to defeat a giant warrior: to make a point! While unwilling, uneducated, and inexperienced, Delwyn reluctantly accepts God's calling and finds himself facing seemingly overwhelming physical obstacles and spiritual battles. But armed with a simple faith and a wooden staff, and assisted by two guardian angels, Delwyn manages to surprise both friend and foe alike, and in the process, delivers God's surprising message. As the reluctant prophet proclaims at the outset: "That's it! God's had it, and He ain't tak'n' it any more!"

Reviews - What do customers think about FIRST CALLED: The Reluctant Prophet?
modern day Christian fable Mar 19, 2005
"As the reluctant prophet proclaims at the outset: `That's it! God's has had it, and He ain't tak'n' it any more'" First Called is a relatively easy read for Christian Fiction. The sub plots and secondary characters are as charming and adorable as the duo the story centers around. Readers are bound to fall in love with the protagonist, and will certainly find inspiration in this modern day Christian fable. First called will most likely hold the greatest appeal to an audience looking for an escape from reality; a place to retreat to where God is good, and gets to save the day. The general storyline is heartwarming and the author's passion for God leaps from its pages. Battles with Satan and his human minions, discussions about how to deal with issues related to 9-11, bar-hopping Angelic Beings, and a few other interesting scenarios help clue the reader into some facets of McLaughlin's world. However, the role of the antagonist is unclear and overall, the supernatural rules seem to change. Ultimately, the plot remains sweet as Mom's apple pie, but weaker than the second cup of tea made from a used tea bag. I think that if the winter blues have you down and you are looking for a little spiritual pick-me-up, then First Called should probably be on your list. It certainly fits the bill as the Christian version of escapist fiction. However, if you are bothered by world- rule inconsistencies ( in addition to some editing issues) and weak antagonists, then you will want to look elsewhere.

This is a wonderful story about a modern day Prophet. My family and I absolutely loved the book and can't wait for the next one!
Pleasant Suprise Feb 8, 2005
This tale of a young man leaving his roots in a small town to spread the word of God is one of those books that you simply cannot put down. The author does a billiant job in really getting you to care about the characters and has you rooting for these characters as if you knew them personally. I would encourage Mr. McLaughlin to keep on writing as he has an obvious talent for it.
