Item description for Holy Innocents: A Novel by Bill Kassel...
Holy Innocents is the first in a series of provocative and highly topical mysteries to be released over the coming months by Catholic journalist and media critic Bill Kassel. It breaks new stylistic ground, bringing a contemporary moral edge to the "cozy mystery" genre. Its a new kind of adult religious fiction: edgy, political, and written in a fast-paced, readable style.
The book deals with two of todays hottest issues: abortion and school choice. It presents the struggles of a colorful and authentic cast of characters, admirable people attempting to live their values in spite of conflicts that assault them personally and threaten the peace of their community. It puts a human face on the abortion dilemma, examining the one concern often overlooked in pro-life writing: the emotional suffering that can drive a young woman to take the life of her child.
The story opens with a riveting first scene: discovery of an aborted fetus at a closed Catholic school. This shattering incident is particularly unnerving to Father Karl Muller, a disillusioned old priest with a troubled past, who longs for a peaceful retirement. Alan Kemp, who had been an investigator in the Air Force, is asked by a friend in the bishops office to look into the situation. What he finds is a well of resentment among teachers in the local public school district who suspect that the diocese plans to reopen the school (called Holy Innocents) to compete for state education funds.
Holy Innocents has been hailed by a wide variety of commentators, such as William A. Donohue, president of the Catholic League for Religious and Civil Rights, who noted: "Bill Kassel has put together a solid mystery with a backdrop of issues that touch our lives. Holy Innocents will take you on a good ride, and leave you thinking."

Reviews - What do customers think about Holy Innocents: A Novel?
Riveting! Jan 13, 2003
Not only was this book authentic, from a Catholic standpoint, it presented the controversial topic of abortion from a compassionate view. The setting could be from any small, midwestern town, USA, and it presented characters that I could truly identify with. Not only did I entertain myself with this book, but it also made me examine my conscience and identify with the characters on a personal level. This is one of the best books that I have read over the past few years.
Lacking in every area Sep 4, 2002
I give this book one star for its authentic presentation of Catholic doctrine. But that's all I can say it earned.
I was hoping (judging from the rave reviews on the back cover) to find this book incredibly exciting and interesting. It wasn't. In contrast to the reviews stating, "I couldn't put it down," I did not want to pick it up.
It was a very big disappointment.
First of all, the book was too doctrinally preachy. There was so much Catholicism that the story itself fell to the background.
Secondly, omniscient point of view not only makes it difficult to endear oneself to a particular character or group of characters, but it is also distracting--jumping from so many thoughts and lives of so many people.
Thirdly, the book lacked description. The story is mostly conversations among one person to another. Detail and description are few and far between. It was impossible to enter into any of the places or settings--I found myself unable to imagine where I was. I felt detached from the story as a whole.
I did not read this book in one sitting. I could not. It never captured my interest and when I did finish it, the ending too, left me unsatisfied.
