This book is a short concise read but it has compelling insights to how leaders can make adjustments and improvements. So, if you want a book that will help you develop the team of leaders around you and if you want a new way to look at yourself, put this in your cart for rush delivery! It is well worth the investment!
Don't have to have an advanced degree in leadership to lead Aug 24, 2006
Bill Hybels continues to show up the myth of academic craze. Do not get me wrong. Academic pursuits are great, but they must not become an end in themselves.
In this work, Hybels shares the fruit of his labors in the research and experience of leadership for over two decades. I find this book to be worth the price. I especially like the his interaction with his ministry. A pastor will appreciate that greatly.
The best book on leadership I've read... Aug 7, 2006
Having heard rave reviews from numerous people, I've been wanting to read this book for several years. After finding the time to get started, I couldn't put it down. This is clearly the book that Hybels has been waiting most of his life to write. I've read several of his other books, and they have been solid. But this was fantastic, clearly the best leadership book I've ever read.
What separates Hybels from the rest is his unflinching ability to cut right to the heart of the matter. He is brutally honest, which occasionally paints a less than perfect portrait of himself. And that transparency allowed the reader to more fully appreciate and respect the conclusions that he has drawn from thirty years of church leadership.
Though some would argue that these leadership principles are completely transferrable to the marketplace (and many of them are), this book is written for church leaders. I appreciate that Hybels is humble enough to admit mistakes and also willing to quote and cite many of the leaders that have influenced him. At the same time, he very clearly declares his personal strengths and has the guts to make assertions with confidence. Though some would argue that his confidence smacks of arrogance, I think it's simply a reflection of lessons learned over the years.
Hybels manages to write this book in a way that is both challenging and captivating. As I was drawn in to the stories that he told, I was naturally reflecting upon my own experiences in leadership. Though Willow Creek is an enormous church, most of his points can be applied in any church context.
I would recommend this book to anyone with a leadership role in the church. It is full of great information that will help all of us lead our churches closer to their redemptive potential, for the glory of Christ and His kingdom!!
