Item description for Dutch Perceptions of the Thai Court of Ayutthaya, Ca. 1604-1765 (Tanap Monographs on the History of Asian-European Interaction) by Bhawan Ruangsilp, Mark W. Lehman, Debra Harmon Gentene, R. F. Keep, F. P. Huang & Janey Tucker...
This study focuses on the perceptions of the merchants of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) of the Thai royal court during their extended residence in Ayutthaya. Basing herself on a wealth of Dutch primary sources, the author shows how trade, politics and diplomacy shaped a unique relationship based on 'partnership' and a 'sense of differences'. The book contributes to expanding the study of Ayutthaya's history-known for its scarcity of indigenous sources- with the help of contemporary Dutch views.
