Wonderful Book! Aug 15, 2009
This book is wonderful! Children and adults will be captivated by the beautiful pictures and the content is right on. My boys received this as a gift and I am buying this for others as gifts. LOVE IT!
How do you explain God to a child? May 9, 2009
It is very difficult to explain God to a young child and this book certainly makes it much easier. Beverly Lewis does a wonderful job with this subject. I look forward to sharing this book with several young friends as well as a grandchild coming my way! Lewis also did a beautiful explanation of heaven for children with "What is Heaven Like". I am a church secretary and our ministers agreed to let these books be used as part of our children's program.
Ideal for opening an educational discussion about God between parents and children Apr 18, 2009
What Is God Like? is a children's picturebook designed to teach young people about the all-encompassing power and love of God. "Dad set his suitcase down and told us again about our Father in heaven. 'He's bigger and more powerful than anyone,' Dad began. 'And He loves you even more than I do. Can you imagine that?'" Gentle color illustrations and a brief biblical quote at the bottom of each page add the perfect touch to this wonderful book ideal for opening an educational discussion about God between parents and children. Highly recommended.
A great book for kids Mar 13, 2009
Kids ask tons of questions - about everything! They want to know how things are made and where things come from. They also want to know about God. In one of her more recent picture books - What is God Like? - prolific author Beverly Lewis answers many of the questions children ask in a way that's easy for them to understand. The questions include: Does God ever sleep? Why did God make people? Do you think He has enough love for everybody in the whole world?
These questions, and many more, are answered matter-of-factly during a conversation that takes place mostly between a brother and a sister. Their father left on a business trip. Before he left, he told his children, "...even when I'm not here, God is always with you." This leads to a discussion between the two siblings about all the things they have learned about God from their parents: that He made the animals, that He is everywhere all the time, that He knows when we've done something wrong, and that God wants us to obey His rules.
The conversations are realistic and are complimented by Bible verses at the bottom of each two-page spread that relates to each aspect of God's nature. For instance, when the children talk about obeying God's rules, the Bible verse cited is Exodus 15:26: "I am the Lord your God. Listen carefully to my voice. Do what is right in my eyes. Pay attention to my commands. Obey all of my rules."
At the end of the book is a page titled, "Teaching Your Child About God," offering ways to share your faith with your children.
The watercolor illustrations by Pamela Querin are beautiful, vibrant, and realistic.
What I Like: Everything. The text, and Bible verses, and illustrations work perfectly together to create a wonderful book for teaching children about God. It's simple to understand without being preachy.
What I Dislike: Nothing.
Age Appeal: The publisher suggests 4-8 as the appropriate age group for this book. I think the book has a wider appeal, more like that of 3-10-year-olds.
Overall Rating: Excellent.

We miss Dad! Nov 5, 2008
Reviewed by Grace Schaefer (age 7-1/2) for Reader Views (8/08)
In "What Is God Like?" kids talk about God and missing their dad. Their dad goes on a long trip but before he leaves he talks to them about God. Throughout the book they discuss what their dad told them.
The best part of the book is the scripture at the bottom of the pages. I like it because it is from many different books of the Bible and it is the word of God. There is a part of the book that they talk about `Skittles,' the next-door-neighbor's cat. That is a funny name.
The pictures in the book are fun and beautiful to look at. I especially like the one of the brother and the sister where she is holding her doll. It makes me happy when I look at it.
Overall I did not like "What Is God Like" because it was too long. It made me sleepy.
