Item description for The Parting (The Courtship of Nellie Fisher, Book 1) by Beverly Lewis...
Overview In THE COURTSHIP OF NELLIE FISHER, Beverly Lewis returns to Lancaster County for a powerful new series based on actual historical events-a heated debate over salvation...and tractors-that causes a group of Amish families to break away from the Old Order. And two young people who are caught in the heartbreaking divide... Passionate and stubborn Nellie Fisher knows that if her family breaks away from their church district, she stands to lose her beloved Caleb, staunch in his Old Order beliefs. But if she follows Caleb, she will lose her dear family. And what of the gentle stirrings she feels when her bishop-uncle speaks of an assurance of salvation her soul longs for? Continuing to meet at the millstream, their secret place, Nellie and Caleb are determined to stay together, although much is at stake for each of them. Caleb risks the coveted land his father promised him-his birthright. And Nellie knows that if she does not soon respond to Caleb's betrothal offer, she will surely lose him to the deacon's daughter, who is ready and willing to do whatever it takes to marry him. Will their families end up on the same side of the division? Or will Nellie and Caleb be forced to part?

Hi, Was very pleased with the 1st book sent but later got about 4 copies of the same book which I have returned. Do not know how the mishap occurred but pray they will be taken off my charge card as they have been returned. Thanks, Colene
I would really give it 4.5 stars if I could... Apr 6, 2009
So, this is the first Beverly Lewis book I've read, and I am going to definitely read more! This book was recommended by a friend, who loves books by this author. The book (the first in a series of 3) is about Nellie Mae Fisher, and Amish girl from Pennsylvania. The book starts out kind of slowly (the second and third books in the series start out more interesting because you already know the background info). The books kind of has to build the characters at the beginning, build the plotlines, and also give you some info about Amish people. The book is about just what it says: the courting of Nellie Mae Fisher. It is interesting to read about the courting (what we "Englishers" call dating) rituals of the Amish (not sure if they've changed as the book was set in the 1960s). Meanwhile, while Nellie Mae is courting during her Rumschpringe ('running around' time, before being baptized into the Amish church) a divide happens among the Amish people in her community. Some start studying the bible (which I guess wasn't allowed by the Amish at this time). There were even parts of the bible that weren't to be read. This causes a great divide in the Amish community with people taking sides and shunning the people who study the bible and claim to be saved. This, in turn, causes some problems for Nellie Mae and her courting. I don't want to give too much away, but it's very interesting to read about something different. It is also interesting to see how some feelings are universal, no matter the culture. Like first love, sadness over not being able to conceive (a side plot in the book, Nellie's friend Rosanna who is unable to conceive), missing a loved one who has died, exploring religion, etc. Beverly Lewis creates characters you care about. Since getting into the first book a few days ago, I've barely been able to put the books (in the series) down. I'm currently on book 3! If you're looking for something a little different and have never read these kind of books before, start here. You will be glad you did.
Looking forward to reading the others! Feb 18, 2009
This is the first of three books about Nellie Fisher, followed by The Forbidden (The Courtship of Nellie Fisher, Book 2) and The Longing (The Courtship of Nellie Fisher, Book 3). I only purchased the first one because I was unsure if I would like it enough to read the others in the series. Upon finishing it however, I was disappointed I hadn't ordered the others too, because now I have to wait until they get here- I'm ordering them after I finish writing this!
I've only recently started reading Amish fiction, and this is my first experience with author Beverly Lewis. (I can however recommend Hidden (Sisters of the Heart, Book 1) and Wanted (Sisters of the Heart, Book 2) by Shelley Shepard Gray!) I know that this is not the most popular of Lewis' books, but the positive reviews speak for themselves. Lewis clearly knows her subject, and she's made the audience feel involved in this tale about Amish Nellie Mae. There are a few different plots swirling around in this story, and I think that is one of the things that makes it interesting. In a way the story deals with the 'circle of life'. There's a death of one of their own, a courtship, and new life. Religion of course also plays a strong part, and with that change.
The title, "The Parting" has at least two meanings for this story, and the next two- "The Forbidden" and "The Longing"- already have me anticipating what will happen. Overall I can give this story a solid four stars, and definitely recommend it to those who enjoy reading Amish fiction, or those simply looking to try something different.

I have read almost all of Beverly Lewis books and I would recommend anyone of them that she writes. Make sure you read the ones that are in series in a the order they are written. The series from the Parting was excellent. True to life of how the Amish live. Make sure that the ones you buy are for adults, some are for very young children.
Excellent! Jan 22, 2009
I have read all three of the books, and they are great! It's interesting to read about the history of the Amish in the 1960s, and how the New Order came to be. I found myself really interested in the lives of Nellie, Caleb,Rhoda, and especially Rosanna. I highly recommend these books!
