Item description for Jesus Unplugged: Provocative, Raw and Fully Exposed by Bert Gary...
Overview Jesus Unplugged exposes the provocative Jesus of the New Testament, a raw nerve Jesus who has been there right under our nose all alone, but who has been hid in plain view by preachers and teachers who avoid or sanitize much of what the Gospels tell us about the man from Nazareth. Groundbreaking examination of scripture that reveals the real Jesus; a politically incorrect cage rattler who challenged the powerful and defended the defenseless. There is much emphasis in the church today<->by laity and clergy<->on being respectable, nice, and presentable. Yet where in scripture did Jesus say that we should make being well-dressed and well-behaved priorities? Is the church guilty of reducing Christianity to mere social etiquette? The Jesus of scripture rejected these priorities with word and deed. This book goes back to the original passages in the Gospels that reveal not a cautious, image-conscious Jesus, but a provocative, politically incorrect cage-rattler for whom appearance and reputation meant nothing. It examines the original Gospel passages that are regularly avoided or sanitized by pastors, teachers, and writers exploring those times when Jesus said No and when he disturbed the peace. There are profound implications in understanding that the Jesus of the Bible is no passive pushover, but a vigorous truth-warrior who slays falsehoods with a sharp, double-edged sword. Intended for adults interested in knowing Jesus better and well-suited for personal reading or small group study. Jesus Unplugged is a provocative, accurate, biblical re-examination of Jesus. Reviews - What do customers think about Jesus Unplugged: Provocative, Raw and Fully Exposed?
Jesus Unplugged Review May 5, 2008
I was completely taken by this book. Once you pick it up, you can't put it down. It is very thought provoking. I originally borrowed this book from a relative. I thought it was such an exceptional book that I had to buy my own copy to refer back to (and I do). I also bought my pastor a copy and asked my church to order more copies so we can look into an in-depth study of this book. Five Stars!! Erin, Denham Springs, LA
A thoughtful eyeopener May 18, 2006
This one made me keep my Bible handy to verify some of the insightful observations. I've never looked at Jesus and his ministry in this light before. I came away with a question that's been haunting me since I finished the book six months ago: "If even the insiders - Jesus' dsciples - needed interpretation to understand Jesus' parables, why was he so popular with the masses?'
I'm buying ten copies to give to friends and relatives.
Unplug your mind Nov 1, 2005
I have to admit I also am partial to Bert Gary! His is my pastor and teacher. This is one of the most thought proboking books I have recently read -- even more since I have the priviledge of participating in Bert's Book Study! I was introduced to Bert Gary several years ago when he conducted a study on Jerusalem. At that time I knew I was being taught! This book is an uncomfortable pleasure! It does require us to unplug our minds and think of the Jesus of our childhood in a new and much more revealing way! I can only strongly suggest that if the reader wants to meet the multidimensional Jesus this is the book! Thanks Bert!
Challenging and Engaging Oct 26, 2005
I will begin with this disclaimer: Bert Gary is a friend and colleague. But my prejudice in his favor as an individual in no way colors my judgment of the power of Jesus Unplugged. Bert successfully challenges the comfortable "Sunday School Jesus" that fills our churches and shows us a Jesus that is much harsher, more demanding, and often disturbing. In short, he shows us a more honest picture of this rabbi from Nazareth.
At the same time, Jesus Unplugged reveals a Jesus who is more interesting and more engaging than the one who is too often taught in Sunday School classrooms and from pulpits. This Jesus isn't boring! He challenges us yet at the same time fascinates us as well.
The book is often a fun read. Bert's style of writing and his humor engages the reader. At the same time, he deals with often complex theological and historical issues in a manner that makes them easy to understand. First century eastern cultural norms are used to help the reader appreciate the true depth and meaning of some of Jesus' words and deeds.
One of the best features of the book are the thought-provoking questions (entitled "Unplug Your Mind") that appear throughout the text. Jesus Unplugged provides an excellent opportunity for group study and these questions open the door for powerful group discussion.
If you are comfortable with a meek, mild, and "safe" Jesus - one that has nothing to do with the Jesus in the four gospels - then this book is probably not for you. If on the other hand you are willing to be challenged and engaged by this rabbi from Nazareth, if you are willing to really get to know Jesus as he is in the Bible, if you are willing to grow; Jesus Unplugged is not to be missed.
