The Perfect Biography! Jun 27, 2005
I've always found General G. W. Custis Lee a fascinating individual. As a Civil War enthusiast and one who feels a deeply spiritual affinity for that era and its inhabitants, General Custis Lee has captivated me like no other. Perhaps because he was a quiet, introspective man, less is known of him than of his more sociable parents and siblings. In these two volumes, Ms. Yates combines biographical information with Lee's personal correspondence to bring into sharper focus a rather enigmatic persona, and she does it so succesfully that even with the inclusion of a plethora of heretofore unknown information, it still made me want to know *more*. The character himself is a marvelous study: an exceptionally intelligent, complex, solitary figure; a scion of Virginia aristocracy who made duty his lifelong endeavor, and yet there is an incredible amount of pathos that shapes his life, such as the confiscation of the Arlington mansion, his sense of selflessness, his inexplicable lack of confidence, and his lonely bachelorhood. The author superbly provides the reader with the background, events, and personality traits that defined the existence of Robert E. Lee's oldest son. As was cheered on the old battlegrounds, a hearty "Huzzah!" to Ms. Yates for this insightful study of Custis Lee, the utterly perfect gentleman.
