Item description for Lazarus at the Table: Catholics And Social Justice (Michael Glazier Books) by Bernard F. Evans...

Overview
Lazarus at the Table is the fruit of more than two decades of instructing students in the social teachings of the Catholic Church. For most of these years Bernard Evans has taught graduate students. Lately he also teaches lay Catholics engaged in parish ministry and enrolled in diocesan ministry formation programs. This book is written specifically for the latter group. Evans agrees with the bishops of the United States who insist that any Catholic education that does not include Catholic social teaching is not fully Catholic. And so he writes clearly, concisely, and convincingly about how Catholic social teaching addresses such contemporary issues as human dignity, abortion, assisted suicide and euthanasia, embryonic stem cell research, the death penalty, war, family, marriage, poverty, superfluous income, just wages, unions, peace, solidarity, and many more. Excerpts from the church's official teachings in papal documents abound throughout the book.

Reviews - What do customers think about Lazarus at the Table: Catholics And Social Justice (Michael Glazier Books)?

What you should have learned in CCD  Apr 19, 2008
Here's an easy to read, comprehensive summary of how we're not just encouraged but required to work for systemic political changes that will enable all to eat, heat, learn, and be welcome here--aimed at parish social justice committees.

Catholic Social Teaching Then and Now  Dec 21, 2006
This slim volume on Catholic social teaching (CST)is ideal for individual and group use. The author skillfully presents each of the seven princples of CST with reference to Church documents, historical background, and specific examples. Each chapter closes with questions and suggestions for action to help readers reflect on the material. Points I found especially apt relate to Rights and Responsibilities and Option for the Poor and Vulnerable.

The chapter on Rights and Responsibilities discusses prioritizing justice activities. Evans uses the example of separating the right to life from all other human rights. In the minds of those who engage in this practice, he writes, "the right to life--and this often means the right to be born--is the most important of all rights and should receive more of our attention than other rights.... Our challenge is not to prioritize human rights but to recognize all of them as necessary, and to defend any right that comes under threat."

The chapter on Option for the Poor and Vulnerable traces development of the Church's view on the obligation to provide for the less fortunate. In the years leading up to the reign of John Paul XXIII, we were urged to consider sharing a portion of our "superfluous" goods with the poor, as an act of charity. But in 1962 John XXIII introduced the element of justice, stating that we must determine which of our goods are "superfluous" in terms of the needs of others "and to see to it that the administration and the distribution of created goods serves the common good."
