Pretty good CD Could use a book Sep 19, 2009
The CD is a good presentation of the basics and easy to use in the car. I wish it had a small pamphlet to show the material on the CD for visual reinforcement.
Avoid at all costs. Pronounces words incorrectly right from the start. Apr 5, 2009
I have been studying Korean for 4 months when I picked up this hoping to get some voice samples to make flashcards out of. As soon as I started listening I realized, quite horrified, that the pronunciations were off. Even some of the most basic words at the start of the CD, like 'hello' were off. I am lucky enough that I already knew some basic phrases and have heard them from several different native speakers: and this CD does them differently.
How they can mess up pronunciations on such basic words I can't imagine. My best guess is a non-native speaker was reading romanized versions... which is.. just a travesty.
My advice is to avoid this at all costs or risk learning the wrong pronunciation.
Beyond the pronunciation issues I didn't think the format of this CD was very useful. Unlike, say, the Pimsleur series which uses short term repetition to build memory, this just steamrolls robotically from phrase to phrase without any meaningful order. This wouldn't bother me, since I only wanted to rip the voice samples out to make cards, but since the pronunciations can not be trusted.. It is more likely to do harm than good.
