Reviews - What do customers think about Berlitz German Guaranteed (Berlitz Guaranteed) (German Edition)?
I have learned some German, but... Nov 20, 2007
Berlitz German Guaranteed This audio course is definitely worth the money however, there are a few caveats.
Firstly, the speed at which the course is given could be very difficult to follow for beginners. At times, I found myself lost - trying to absorb & process the previous German discussion while they move toward a new discussion. I have substantial Foreign Language studies on other languages and thought this to be somewhat of a hurdle. The benefit of this pace must be an "instant immersion" into the content provided. You are nearly forced to understand what's spoken and develop comprehension immediately.
Secondly, the content is strictly conversational. Some may view this as a benefit. It begs the question, "What happens after the 15 - 20 conversations you've learned?" Very little vocabulary is practiced past the 3 - 4 variations to each discussion. Will native German speakers become bored with the conversation after just a few minutes? My recommendation is to pick up a supplementary book of German Vocabulary to further your speaking power. German Vocabulary (Barron's Vocabulary Series)
Thirdly, you must download any printed materials from [...] to study along with. I'm sure this is done in order to keep cost down however, it would be nice to have a study compendium similar in size & shape to the CD case that you could easily bring with you in a backpack or briefcase. Although this is a bother, the website does provide some useful information in addition to study manuals.
Lastly (albeit minor), the volume of the recording seems to vary wildly throughout the discs. I find myself reaching for the volume control in my vehicle often. The voice of the English speaker (as mentioned in previous reviews) can be quite disorienting when this volume issue occurs.
Overall, for less than $30 (including the German Vocabulary title), this is well worth the price. You most likely would not be able to find a Foreign Language tutor willing to work for $7 / Hr. I have learned some German and for that I thank Berlitz.
Not for Beginners Aug 15, 2005
I recently purchased this CD package to refresh my high school Spanish. I thought it was going to be like previous Berlitz audio Spanish I have used (which was entirely in Spanish) and it is not. It is adequate for me because I am just refreshing, however while the topics are beginner level, the way it is presented is not.
It has the annoying female voice that speaks in English all the time. The course work is a bit confusing, because it doesn't really follow a pattern that would make learning easy.
I would be very frustrated with this package if I didn't already know Spanish. I would not recommend this for someone that is trying to learn Spanish from scratch. There are other Berlitz options that are much better for complete beginners.
