Item description for The Adventures of Odysseus (Classic Literature with Classical Music) by Benedict Flynn...
Back at the dawn of the LP era, Verdi fans who wanted to hear anything he composed before Rigoletto usually had to resort to the Cetra label, which assiduously turned out recordings of Italian operas--usually from radio broadcasts--that bigger companies ignored. The performances tended to be provincial in quality, the text often was seriously cut, and the sound engineering was primitive. But until the 1960s Cetra offered the only Nabucco, Ernani, or Luisa Miller you could find. Those old Cetras have been superseded now and are of primarily archaeological interest, but this one deserves some attention for Fernando Previtali's forceful conducting and a generally interesting cast--notably Gino Penno. Penno had a relatively short career and is nearly forgotten today, but in 1951 he knew and demonstrated how Ernani should be sung. --Joe McLellan

Odysseus Apr 28, 2008
This Odyssey is a lot of family fun. We started off getting one of this series for a vacation trip in the car. Now we have collected eight more for any and all trips in the car, and for our enjoyment at home. The Adventures of Odysseus is one of our favorites. We love the powerful music and narration, and the epic adventure. This has helped us watch less tv, and I think my kids are learning something. We also like the Greek Legends one in this series. I have always love Greek mythology and the Homeric stories. I got this for my children. They absolutely adore it and ask to listen to it often. - Makes a wonderful alternative to TV.
Great CD!! Jan 6, 2007
I bought this CD for my daughters, ages 5&6, who are studying ancient civilizations. What a great way to bring hisory and classic literature alive!! Benedict Flynn did an excellent job - we enjoyed the way he changed his voice to become different characters, he is definitely not monotone. Both my girls have listened to the set over and over again. It was and still is enjoyed by the whole family.
A great audiobook for the entire family May 16, 2004
This audio version of Odysseus is exciting and detailed enough to be interesting to adult listeners but fully engaged my three sons, ages 9,8 and 7. Now my first grader makes references to "the lotus eaters" and my fourth grader was shocked when I couldn't remember who Polydemus was (he's the Cyclops). A good introduction to a classic tale; perfect for a long car trip.
