Item description for Parables of a Country Parson: Heartwarming Stories of Christian Faith and Life by William E. Barton, W. Barton & Stan Flewelling...

Overview
A grandfather gently persuades a reluctant little boy to wash both hands. A wise woman draws upon her knowledge of baking to teach an important lesson about life's empty places. A millionaire tumbles ingloriously down a flight of stairs because he is too haughty to take note of a scrublady and her bar of soap. Barton's winsome characters will charm you and his wry wit will entertain you, smoothing the way for his deft applications of timeless, biblically rooted wisdom. Assuming the voice of an ancient sage, but commenting on life in the early twentieth century, Barton captivated millions of readers with his extraordinary insight into everyday happenings. Half a century later, church historian Garth Rosell began reading these stories to delighted friends and students. Many who heard them at the dinner table, from the pulpit, and in the classroom wanted to share them with others. So Rosell, with the help of writer Stan Flewelling, sought out the now-rare original volumes in order to make the present collection available to a contemporary public that cherishes the power of a well-told story to speak truth straight to the heart.

Reviews - What do customers think about Parables of a Country Parson: Heartwarming Stories of Christian Faith and Life?

Parables of a Country Parson  Sep 1, 2008
This small volume contains some of the most clever, funny and insightful material I've read in a long time. The old English style of writing adds to the charm of each little vignette. Anyone lookiing for some inspiration or just to have a smile put on your face should read Dr. Rosell's compilation.

Great Book  Feb 8, 2008
Excellent book full of wisdom and inspiration. Also quite enjoyable. It's short chapters are easy to pick up and read even if you only have a few minutes available.

Charming and Captivating  Jan 29, 2008
I ordered this book as a gift for my mom because of the reviews alone. I had never read it. When she started telling me about how wonderful it was, I made sure to read it while there but I disagree...it is MORE than wonderful! The language is old but charming. The way he refers to his granddaughter as the "daughter of the daughter of Ketura" takes some getting used to, but you can't help but smile. The outlook of the author gave me a new perspective on every day life, and he takes little things to a deeper level. The stories are short and captivating, so it is easy to read them in limited amounts of time. I recommend this book to anyone and will now have to purchase a copy for myself!

Everyday parables  May 12, 2007
This is a wonderful book. I have read it at least 4 times over the past few years. Heartwarming stories that underscore values.

From a Student's Perspective  Oct 28, 2005
I am currently a student of Dr. Garth Rosell (the editor), and he begins each class period with a story from this book. Not only does it help us to ease into another day's studies, but it also reminds us to keep the right perspective on our lives. I absolutely adore these stories -- the archaic language used in the book actually adds a sense of grandeur to the otherwise simple tales, and has charmed me from the first sentence. I would highly recommend this book for pastors, teachers, and anyone who needs a short, lively pick-me-up during the day.
