Reviews - What do customers think about Escaping Obstacles?

"YOU'LL BE BACK! ~ All I Could Think Of Was Home, The Place I Hated The Most"  Jun 7, 2008
What first came to mind after reading the title of this book and looking at the cover of this slender 211 page volume was that this was going to be one of those self-help "What Color Is Your Parachute' type of books. I was wrong, this is not a 'how to overcome' book, but an autobiographical 'how I overcame' book.

Bart Hardwell `Escaping Obstacles' is a fast moving, enjoyable and easy read about a nice kid forced to endure a family comprised of irresponsible, selfish and dishonest adults who continue to participate in destructive, addictive behavior revolving around promiscuity, alcohol and drugs. While reading his account I found myself thinking more than once about what I would have done if this was my family? I think I would have packed up and left at a much earlier age and never look back. However hypothetical thinking doesn't factor in the deep, complex underlying currents of emotional and psychological dependency that insidiously bind one to people and place.

The word dysfunctional has been by-in-large a highly misused and overused term that in reality can be applied to just about every family and relationship to some degree. However in the case of this twenty-six year old author, Bart Hardwell dysfunctionality has been the one consistent thing in his life. Probably the most fascinating aspect of this book is the author's sincere desire to share with his reading audience how growing up in such an unhealthy, negative environment can be overcome by an intelligent, caring individual if they trust in God, have faith in themselves and possess the focus and tenacity to keep moving forward no matter how bad things get.

If my information is correct this is Bart Hardwell first published work and there are several problems with his writing style that jumped out at me immediately. The most obvious one is dialogue. Most of the conversations recorded within are stiff and cumbersome, not quite coming across as authentic interactions one would expect to take place between young people. These conversations recalled from the memory of past events have obviously been filtered through the author's adult mind and re-constructed accordingly. However despite this minor flaw Bart's life experiences, inner thoughts and feelings are clearly conveyed in a manner the reader can understand and connect with thus achieving his desired goal nevertheless. What this author lacks in polish and stylistic expression he amply makes up for in his honest, heartfelt rendering of his life story that makes you root for him to succeed.

This may not be great literature, but it's definitely real life.

Humbling  Jun 6, 2008
Very humbling book to read, makes you really appreciate the family that God gave you. Inspiring to know that he stayed his own person through God's will. Hard to imagine someone going through so much and coming out of it just fine. I was rooting for Bart through the whole book, he really keeps you entertained, but grounded. Hard to believe it's a true story. Such courage and strength God gave him. Can't wait to read the next one!

"Family" life at its worst, a success story of avoiding the bonds of chemical dependency and poverty  Jun 3, 2008
This autobiography is one of the most cathartic books I have ever read. In many ways, it is truly hard to believe that anyone would grow up in such a dysfunctional environment and it is incredible that he was able to avoid jail and a life of chemical dependency.
Hardwell grew up in Monroe, Louisiana to a large and extremely dysfunctional family. A large number of people lived in the same house and he was exposed to drug abuse, domestic violence, trouble with the law, poverty and all of the consequences of such activity. Hardwell found solace in school and it was very heartwarming to learn that early in life his best friends were white children of some privilege who treated him well, helped him in many ways and ignored his skin color. It is not a great leap of belief to reach the conclusion that his life would have been far different in the negative sense had they not done so.
There are so many obstacles to his life that it reaches the point where it is no longer just depressing, but becomes tedious to read. This is not a knock on his writing or his story, just that the continued similarity of the problems with family members wears on you. This should give you some idea of how difficult it was for him. Hardwell is a success story that makes you realize how difficult it is for some people and how basic acts of kindness and help can cascade into the difference between a successful person and a life of destitution and drug addiction.
