Reviews - What do customers think about Creek Ceremony?

An extraordinary poet's finest work to date  Sep 18, 2005
Barrie Ryan celebrates the continuity of life in all its forms with reverence and deep care. Her use of metaphor is stunning-- I find myself returning to certain comparisons again and again. Examples are numerous, but ones I especially love are Open Range, about a dying woman, and The Way They Left, a poem about 9/11. And the title poem, Creek Ceremony, is bone deep in its insistence on the grace that accompanies all things.

Ryan writes with ease and insight about the Sonoran desert where she makes her home, the AIDS and hospice men and women she has cared for, her friendship with horses, the complexities of relationship, her leap into song during a morning drive and the memories that follow. Comparisons to Gerald Manley Hopkins and Dylan Thomas have been noted by others, and I second them.

This small, beautiful book offers hope and celebration. Even people who don't frequently read poetry will be touched and moved by such accessible, clear, finely-honed poetry.
