The Powerful Women Beind Literary Zines of Modernism Aug 9, 2004
When I studied the history of women in literature in college back in the 1980's, what struck me was how many women went crazy or talked about going crazy, or committed suicide. So I'm happy to say that this publication brings to light another, more inspiring, line of our history. America Meet Modernism brings us the powerful and before-their-time women who founded and were the backbones of great literary publications in the last two centuries. Margaret Fuller and "The Dial" and Harriet Monroe and "Poetry" are just two of the gutsy and intellectual women whose contributions and talents are explored in this book. (Perhaps of special interest is the chapter on "Poetry", which in 2002 received headlines when it received a $100 million grant from Ruth Lily). Thanks to the editor, Barbara Probst Solomon, for her commitment to bringing us this history.
