Item description for Speaking of Sin: The Lost Language of Salvation by Barbara Brown Taylor...

Overview
In Speaking of Sin, Barbara Brown Taylor brings her fresh perspective to a cluster of words that often cause us discomfort and have widely fallen into neglect: sin, damnation, repentance, penance, and salvation. She asks, Why, then, should we speak of sin anymore? The only reason I can think of is because we believe that God means to redeem the world through us. Abandoning the language of sin will not make sin go away. Human beings will continue to experience alienation, deformation, damnation and death no matter what we call them. Abandoning the language will simply leave us speechless before them, and increase our denial of their presence in our lives. Ironically, it will also weaken the language of grace, since the full impact of forgiveness cannot be felt apart from the full impact of what has been forgiven. Contrary to the prevailing view, Taylor calls sin a helpful, hopeful word. Naming our sins, she contends, enables us to move from guilt to grace. In recovering this lost language of salvation in our worship and in the fabric of our individual lives, we have an opportunity to take part in the divine work of redemption.

Reviews - What do customers think about Speaking of Sin: The Lost Language of Salvation?

Engaging and powerful  Mar 19, 2008
Drew me in from the start. Ended up opening the book and reading it through in two hours without leaving my seat. Accesible read with down-to-earth language while totally engaging and thought provoking. As a preacher and teacher I am using it in many ways.

Worth the Read, but Not At The Top of the List  Aug 24, 2007
Good sound thought in this book, especially her call for Christian action rather than Christian thought, words and piety...

Not exactly a thought provoking, invigorating book, but worth the read nonetheless.

Good, but not her best---and she is really, really good!!

Speaking of Sin  May 19, 2007
We used this book for a study group at my church. It is beautifully written, lucid, challenging, and evoked meaningful discussion.

Some of it is very helpful  Jan 31, 2006
This book has a very good and insightful exploration of the meanings of sin and of repentance. Barbara Brown Taylor is right to remind us that if we forget what "sin" means, then words like "grace" and "salvation" will become hollow soon after. On that part this book gets 5 stars. Unfortunately, aside from a few passing references, she doesn't do a good job of explaining the Biblical teaching of what Jesus has to do with any of this. While somewhat ambiguous, she seems to take a "Jesus shows us the way" position; which is true, but is not the whole Biblical truth of "Jesus is the way". So on this part I give her only one star. At any rate, this is a very well-written book that will probably be helpful to all sorts of Christians, but I recommend it with reservations.

Christ is Coming Back Soon. Repent and Change.   Nov 10, 2005
Christ hates sin and He wants you to make it to Heaven and the only way for that to happen is if you obey the Ten Commandments Read your Bible, and place your trust in Him (Jesus Christ).
In the End times, never take the Mark of the Beast or else you will go to Hell. The mark of the Beast time will be a time in where the Devil in the flesh will rule this Earth. So in order to make it to Heaven and have Immortal and eternal life, You have to Follow Christ.

How do i get saved?

1. Pray alot for yourself, and ask for Forgiveness.

2. You admit and believe in your mind, heart and soul that Jesus Christ is the Son Of God.

3. Pray for the poor and do something for the poor.

4. Don't hate anyone, leave them alone. Don't wish anyone any bad things to occur to them.

5. Pray and Pray and Pray. I also recommend any books on Joy Lamb, like a book titled, "The Sword of the Spirit, The Word of God."

Books i recommend to you is the following:

1.How to avoid Hell by Friar Schouppe. 2.As well as reading,"
The sword of the spirit, the Word of God" by Joy Lamb.
3. Also recommended to read King James Version Christian Bible.
4. Always go to Church, or Pray at Home.

Repent of your sins and live a clean life as well as believing in Christ-- is Key for Eternal Salvation.
