Item description for D'une gaite ingenieuse. L'Histoire de Gil Blas, roman de Lesage (La Republique des Lettres) by B. Didier & J-P Sermain...
Lesage did not write one Histoire de Gil Blas, but three, ten and twenty years apart, respectively. The authors of this publication proposed that the first story, from 1715, can be read separately. They demonstrate the hesitance of critics towards one of the few still popular 18th century novels, but they also show literary intentions of this work, with its fine humour and postcritical ingenuity. The aim of this historical project is thus a poetic ambition: the interpretations of Gil Blas proposed here contribute to our knowledge of the properties of Ancien Regime novels, and the tools of critique adapted to them. The studies in this volume were originally presented during two study sessions; the first in December 2002, at the University of Paris 3-Sorbonne Nouvelle and organized by the Cerlav 18 in collaboration with colleagues from the University of Grenoble; the second in January 2003, at the ENS of the rue d'Ulm. They are completed by two previously unpublished texts by Rene Demoris and Marc Escola.
