More About Avalon
Avalon is an American contemporary Christian vocal quartet. The group has earned multiple RIAA-certified gold records, sold four million albums, and released 22 number one Christian hits.
Avalon formed in 1996, setting a high standard in contemporary Christian music. Reviewing its 2006 projectFaith: A Hymns Collection, All Music Guide noted “the vocal efficiency and personalized stylings that place Avalon among the elite singing groups in contemporary Christian circles.” To date, the quartet has sold more than three million albums, charted 20 No. 1 singles, and won an American Music Award plus numerous Dove Awards such as the 1999 Pop/Contemporary Song of the Year for “Testify to Love.” That song, a listener favorite, has also been specially re-recorded for Another Time, Another Place.

Wonderful Jan 9, 2007
I enjoy the listening to Avalon. I had the cd, and it got misplace so I had to replace it. I listen that CD all year round. Thanks
Joy , By Avalon. Jan 8, 2007
This album is wonderful if you like a little pop with your Christmas. Their voices are wonderful together. The album is very smiler to Boney M Christmas album if you like Boney M Christmas album you will love this one. Their is only 10 songs on the album their could be more but may be on their next Christmas album. They are one of the best pop music artists today. I would highly recommend this album to any one who is looking for a Christmas album to add to their collection.
Sincerely, Jason or Peter Pielak.
A Forgettable Christmas Collection... Nov 9, 2006
Avalon has gone through its ups and downs. I was a fan of their music when they came out in 1996. Their first three albums, 'Avalon,' 'A Maze of Grace,' and 'A Different Light' were quite good. Then they started to go downhill. Their electro-pop age including the songs on their "best-of" album and the lamentable album 'Oxygen' turned me off from them for quite a while. Thankfully, they have made a comeback with two new albums--and members!--that are very good, if not exceptional.
It's a shame this album had to be recorded during that dreadful electro-pop phase.
The song opens with "Joy (to the world)," a ho-hum fast pop number (that is not the traditional "Joy to the World" as we know it). This sets a mediocre tone for the record, for, instead of sounding Christmas-y, this opening number sounds like a typical Avalon song.
The CD consists mostly of covers of traditional and contemporary Christmas songs. (most of) The covers are not bad. But they are not memorable either. For instance, their takes on Celine Dion's "Don't Save it All for Christmas" and Mariah Carey's "Jesus, Born On This Day" are good and enjoyable, but they pretty much replicate the original recordings. Jody sings his heart out, quite admirably on "Don't Save It All," but the song sounds nothing more than a do-over of Celine's recording with a male voice. Likewise, "Jesus, Born on This Day" is good, but does not have quite the warmth of the Mariah Carey version. Why bother listening to these recordings when I have Celine's and Mariah's Christmas CD's.
The album continues with equally forgettable versions of "The Christmas Song" and a "Manger Medley."
The album's worst moments occur on "The Angels Medley" and "Winter Wonderland." The medley, which starts out as a calm version of "The First Noel," progresses into an overly-funky version of "Angels We Have Heard on High" that feels like it goes on forever. "Winter Wonderland" is horrible. It is overly jazzed, and the first 5 seconds of it are enough to make a listener turn it off immediately.
However, the group redeems itself on the finest moments. The original track "Light a Candle" is beautiful and destined to become a classic. A cover of Kathy Mattea's "Good News" is beautifully poignant, laced with harmonies orchestration, and the track actually significantly surpasses Mattea's original recording. The closing number "We Are the Reason" is nothing to shout about, but it's a nice way to close out the album, and the group does the best recording of this song I've ever heard. Even though the song has been overdone by recording artists and churches, this version deserves a listen.
This is not a BAD Christmas CD by any stretch of the imagination. But their are only a few memorable moments, some of which you will want to forget. Other than the original track "Light a Candle" and the groups covers of "Good News" and "We are the Reason," this is a Christmas album that will be destined to get lost in the mix of other Christmas albums that stand out.
Best Song: "Light a Candle"
Christmas traditionals / Total tracks: 8 traditional songs or contemporary covers with 2 new songs
Sample This: The beautiful rendition of "Good News"
What to Avoid: other than the atrocious "The Angels Medley" and "Winter Wonderland," expecting a memorable Christmas collection from the group
The album in 2 words: What album?
Stocking Stuffer or under-the-tree: stocking stuffer
Year after Years I still love it Oct 19, 2006
I had this album for long enough to forget when and where I bought this album. Nontheless, I always find myself going back to this album again and again, and I am not even a church goer. Surely, this ablum has a very strong positive force which moves me deeply wiht all kind of human emotion. This is one of the albums you need to exprience. It will lift you up and show you the light.
Outstanding Musicians! May 5, 2006
This is by far the best Christmas CD and maybe one of the best diplays of Vocalists I have ever heard. Their voices compliment each other in so many dimensions, which gives the music such a rich sound that is full of energy. I have also seen Avalon in concert and they are as good, if not better, live!
