Reviews - What do customers think about Beyond the Rat Race?
I was looking for SIMPLICITY, I got SOCIALISM Feb 2, 2008
This is the second book I purchased under the auspices of SIMPLICITY. Expecting a HOW-TO book, once again I got a WHY-TO book. Obviously written by a post-hippie in 1973, it's all about how horrible is capitalism and how wonderful is socialism. Filled with "Don't feed the war-machine" propaganda left over from the sixties, I tossed this one in the garbage as soon as I read the last page. This is only the second book I've ever thrown away. The first was the other SIMPLICITY book I bought recently by a different author. Both are based on the faulty logic that anything I purchase takes food out of the mouth of some povery-stricken peasant. Give me a break. Isn't there someone out there who will focus on the HOW-TO of simple living? I guess there is - look for an author by the name of Tom Brown and his Guides to Survival and his "grandfather" stories. Look also at Elliot Wigginton's FOXFIRE books.
Getting Started with Simple Living Oct 1, 2002
If you're looking for a first book to get into countercultural, simple/sustainable living which reflects your personal convictions, this book is for you. One of the first written on the topic, it was produced after many of the author's friends kept asking, "So just how do you do it?" You'll get a no-bull, simply written format full of simple things you can do to start changing your life. I recommend starting with one of the suggestions and building from there. Long term habits take time to develop. You won't feel that the ideas are being rammed down your throat, just presented in simple clear logical reasoning. As a human rights activist living overseas, this book has helped me immensely in adjusting my life to that of the people around me in the 'two-thirds' world, and staying that way when I come home.
