Item description for Solving The Missing Member Puzzle by Arlon K. Stubbe...

Overview
Something is wrong. People are going missing, right in front of your eyes! One minute they are staring back at you from their favorite pew, the next Sunday you are looking at an empty spot in that pew. Is there a way to determine ahead of time which members are the likely "religious dropouts"? Often the clues are clearly visible - but can you recognize them? What's more, do you know what you can do now to keep your "missing members" from drifting away? The secret lies in knowing and understanding the attitudes and belief systems that people hold, because certain sets of attitudes are linked to inactivity. A detailed examination of this distressingly common experience, Solving The Missing Member Puzzle can help you spot potential dropouts in advance, learn the reasons why they become inactive, and counteract the process with a proactive strategy for reaching them while they are still within your grasp. Based on "blind" interviews with individuals from ten different congregations, it reveals the underlying attitudes and belief systems that encourage or discourage dropping out of church. Solving The Missing Member Puzzle is a valuable tool for leaders of any church or organization - it shows how you can develop more faithful members, and assists in their growth, participation, and retention. Don't wait until people drop out before you take action. Learn ways to anticipate which members of your congregation might become inactive and the preventive measures that you can take to help keep them in the pews.

Reviews - What do customers think about Solving The Missing Member Puzzle?

Practical primer on parish participation.  Nov 13, 2006
As a sociologist, I recognize the significance of this book as a useful tool to keep people engaged in a church congregation, or, for that matter, in any organization that relies heavily on the active participation of its members. All too often, clergy take for granted their stalwart, dependable, hard-working church members and instead focus their retention efforts on those who are often absent, virtually non-participative, and in clear danger of leaving the fold altogether. Pastor Stubbe makes it clear to his readers that a common mistake made by many church ministers is to ignore their active members and, in so doing, are in danger of losing them. Hence, the challenge is to keep active church members engaged and to recognize that even the most stalwart church members cannot be overlooked or ignored by clergy. To ignore such church members is to put the entire organization in jeopardy as they may feel disenfranchised, apathetic, and eventually lose interest in actively participating in church activities. A good pastor needs to focus on all the members of his or her church: the dedicated and the delinquent. Hopefully, Stubbe's study of the missing member puzzle will be read by all those who are concerned with keeping their organization--be it a church, business or a volunteer group--viable, healthy, and thriving.

This is a book written for those who lead social organizations, especially those who are church leaders. Its presentation is clear, concise, and informal. It is a practical primer on maintaining and nurturing the membership of a social organization and one of its greatest strengths is that is based on original social research by Stubbe; however, it is not cast like a weighty sociological tome chock full of graphs, pie charts, statistical equations, and, what sociologist Theodor W. Adorno would castigate as "the jargon of authenticity" which mars many a sociological study (and makes it virtually unreadable to those who are not professional sociologists). Personally, I kind of miss all that stuff, but this book is not written for the sociological cognoscenti as it is aimed at a much more diverse audience. What I really miss is the lack of an index and a bibliography that informs the reader of other studies and the social science methodology that informs this study. The inclusion of an index and bibliography (preferably annotated) would go a long way in providing those interested in the study to explore further the issues raised by Stubbe's research. Aside from these minor criticisms, I must commend Pastor Stubbe for such an insightful study that helps to solve the missing member puzzle and lay bare the overall problem of the lack of participation by members in a social organization.

Significant Solutions to a Perennial Puzzle  Oct 15, 2006
With clarity of thought and style, Arlon Stubbe in Solving the Missing Member Puzzle offers extraordinarily helpful insights regarding a perennial problem. His many suggestions for constructive action are compelling and workable. In the past, I have read a number of books on this subject. From now on, Stubbe's is the one I will be re-reading and recommending and following. Thanks to this book, I now see much new hope and promise and opportunity in this matter of "missing members" and in the whole process of building a congregation of active, growing Christians.

Promising Solution To A Perplexing Problem  Oct 12, 2006
Anyone who has ever had to deal with an attrition challenge will appreciate this book! Whether you are in a religious or secular setting, the problem is the same - how DO you keep people focused, motivated and involved? Pastor Stubbe offers deep insights into the causes and potential solutions to the missing member puzzle. Having worked side by side with him for several years, I can attest to their effectiveness.
