Item description for The Secret by Anna Enquist...

Winner of the 1997 Dutch Book of the Year. A concert pianist learns of a secret from her dying mother which cripples her life. Its resolution comes with an understanding of her family's past.

Three story lines run through THE SECRET, like themes in a composition, sometimes merging, sometimes overlapping, and sometimes going in different directions: this is the story of Wanda Wierickhe, the story of her past and the story of Bouw, the man she l eft.

Concert pianist Wanda Wiericke sees music as a way of escaping reality. It is her answer to questions about her place in the world. So important is it, that when forced to choose, she leaves her husband for it. But when her mother literally spits up "the secret" on her deathbed, Wanda is no longer able to withdraw into her music. A rheumatic disorder prevents her from playing: she does not touch a piano again until she has come to terms with her past.

Enquist's novel is a quest for insight, it works towards a catharsis. She offers no easy solutions. The book's climax does not come with the revelation of the secret, but in the process of coming to terms with it. THE SECRET has been translated by Jeannette K. Ringold, who also translated last year's Toby Press English edition of THE MASTERPIECE.

Reviews - What do customers think about The Secret?

A most enjoyable book about life and music  Aug 28, 2001
Yesterday I finished this lovely novel by Anna Englund, a Dutch author who is also a classically trained pianist and psychoanalyst!! I think it was awarded a price in Holland as the best in novel in 1997 Her name is very Swedish but is in fact a pseudonym. Her real name is Christa Widlund (and now only the last name is Swedish). She is married to a Swedish cellist. I heard a radio interview with her and her Swedish is almost fluent. My god, some people are gifted! The novel is extremely well written, her style is lucid and transparent. It is a story about a woman pianist, growing up in Holland during the war, the price you have to pay when your life is only music. And somewhere there is a secret hidden.... The parts when she writes about music is so poetical and enticing so I find myself longing for piano music by Bach, Chopin, Mozart, Schubert etc. You don't have to be a music fan like myself to enjoy this novel but it certainly gives you an extra dimension Or perhaps it will make you curious about it!
The atmosphere in this novel reminded me of novels by Maarten t' Haart, another good Dutch author who has written about growing up in Holland during the second world war. His novels are also fílled with music!
