Item description for The Masterpiece by Anna Enquist...

One of the finest novelists and poets writing in the Netherlands today, Anna Enquist's first novel took the Dutch and German reading public by storm. The Masterpiece takes place during three days in the life of the painter Johan Steenkamer, and of the women closest to him. Is an artist as self-absorbed as Johan capable of expressing the deepest emotional understanding through his art, or is his seductive energy entirely selfish, a surface gloss.

Reviews - What do customers think about The Masterpiece?

You can judge this book by its title  Aug 22, 2001
I stumbled upon the masterpiece when my friend forced it upon me and declared that I had to read it. I'd never heard of it or the publisher before, but it is a truly amazing book- the tragic, enthralling story of a painter and his relationships with everything around him. He paints a frightening portrait of his wife and her best friend, and the starkness and honesty of the picture forces them to come to terms with the past. This was the first that I've read of Anna Enquist, and I loved her raw, sharp style, her characters, and her novel. Read this book.
