Reviews - What do customers think about Witness to Integrity: The Crisis of the Immaculate Heart Community of California?

Part of my history  Nov 8, 2007
I was a student at IHC during the l961 to l965 revolution in the church, the college and the LA Archdiocese. It was my graduating class who volunteered to teach in the IHC schools when the nuns went to finish their credentials. This wonderful woman was the dignified president of the college my freshman and sophomore years. The book read like a true life spy novel to me and anyone who was part of this exciting time but had no idea how deep and wide the injustices and the courage to confront them. This book should be an inspiration to those who have despaired the reluctance of the Roman Church to respond to the enlightenment and renewal of Vatican II. 45 years later the struggle continues and repression and renewal are still in contention. Others are relearning this lesson that integrity may lie in saying no to Rome. Carolyn Johnson Moynihan-Bradt

I learned new things from this book.  Aug 11, 2006
I learned a lot from reading this book. I did not know much about the reforms of Pope John Paul and it was interesting to read how one group interpreted Vatican II. Not being a Catholic - I learned a lot about how the church is run - laws for operation, etc.
This book is interesting. If you keep the authors perspective in mind when reading this you will enjoy it. Take the other reviews with a grain of salt.

A fairytale of a novel  Jan 21, 2004
This book is nothing but bitter fantasy.

If you want the facts on how the IHM fell, check out Msgr. Francis Weber's "His Eminence of Los Angeles: James Francis Cardinal McIntyre" from your local library or bookseller.

Weber's work is based on fact, not fiction mixed with a large dose of misandry.

Fiction, not the truth  Jan 21, 2004
The toxic spirit of Carl Rogers and the late 1960's/early 1970's killed the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. They used sexism-feminism as their tool.

It's too bad that Caspary chose to delve into fiction rather than to tell the truth -- including an apology perhaps.

Thankfully her dissident type are finally dying out within the Church.

May God bless those nuns who have stayed faithful to the IHM in Los Angeles.

Anti-Catholic Feminist Liars - Won't tell you this....  Nov 11, 2003
A little background info about the Anita Marie Caspary's "Convent":

An exerpt from Nuns and Midshipmen - Dr. Gerald L. Atkinson

4 July 2001

As a result of this experiment, hundreds of nuns (out of the 590 in the order) asked to be dispensed from their vows. In a period of just a few years, Carl Rogers had destroyed the IHM order and the 90 schools at which the nuns taught. The sensitivity training sessions had separated them from their religious discipline and plunged them into a 'renewed' religious order, which meant "we were together constantly, talking endlessly and intensively ... about love and hope and philosophy." All of this "intensely emotional talk" about "great thinkers and modern psychology" inevitably led to sexual feelings, which inevitably led to sexual activity, which inevitably led to a religious crisis when it became apparent that the nuns were acting in ways which were incompatible with the vows they had taken."

A few fell in love with and eventually married their 'facilitator' psychologists, outsiders as well as priests of the same cloth. Many others turned to lesbianism. Hundreds of other nuns simply became confused, frustrated, and morally lost.

The confused nuns naturally went to their priests for guidance. But the priests had been indoctrinated by the same psychologists who were working their magic on the nuns. The priests refused to pass judgment on the nuns' sexual exploits and said that it was up to them to decide for themselves whether their actions were right or wrong.

In one instance, the priest was himself a psychologist who had been brought into the order to facilitate the very encounter groups which were the catalyst for the sexual activity which was causing the problem. Rogers' experiment destroyed the IHM order.

It was apparent that the perpetrators knew that the encounter groups would be toxic to the IHM nuns. They knew that, once the mother superior gave the order to conduct the experiment, the hierarchical authority of the order would ensure that the nuns would be at the complete mercy of the clinical psychologists -- both outside and inside the Catholic order. In fact, after a lecture at Sacred Heart in 1962, Abraham Maslow noted in a diary entry that the talk had been 'successful,' and that 'They shouldn't applaud me. They should attack me. If they were fully aware of what I was doing, they would attack.'

They're attacking, alright! The Church!
