The Traveler's Gift: Seven Decisions that Determine Personal SuccessSeven Suggestions for writing meaningful books: 1) Be original: It's a Wonderful Life and A Christmas Carol did it better. Andy Anderson is no Frank Capa or Charles Dickens.
2) Make characters that are real, not cardboard.
3) Get your facts straight. Christopher Columbus (Colombo) was an Italian who lived in Portugal and in Spain and probably did speak all three languages, but why would he speak Portuguese to an American on a Spanish ship? And why would Columbus claim to have special insight about the world being round when it was a pretty commonly accepted by the Renaissance? Fact checking is so easy with lots of good sites online.
4) Don't underestimate your audience.
5) Pick a genre, any genre. It is not good science fiction when there are too many logical fallacies. For example, the hero is wearing jeans into which he manages to stuff a scroll from Solomon, a leather pouch, various notes and pieces of paper. Fantasy? Then let's magically shrink these items. Inspirational? Not particularly, especially not this writing style.
6) Life is unpredictible. The ending of any book should not be this predictible.
7) Don't be preachy. The Ten Commandments pretty much covered the whole thing already, succinctly, without being preachy. Find a new franchise.

How to absorb a new attitude and enjoy life Mar 19, 2008
I really admired "The Traveler's Gift"--it's an attractive book, easy to read and enjoyable. The message is key: change your attitude and change your life.
Mr. Andrews has a way of telling stories--parables, that are meaningful to anybody and enjoyable to read. His writing is engaging. I found I could not put his book down when i read the print copy.
The principles are akin to positive thinking, for which I am a firm believer. Once I change my daily attitude towards something, whether it be a person or a task at hand, the situation becomes clearer, rights itself and things go the way I need for them to go. And I have less stress. But accomplishing "positive thinking" is of course not easy or else we'd all be doing it. Here, Andy Andrews sets down rules that frame positive thinking into actions and deeds as well as setting the table around your life. These concrete seven statements really get the job done. When I read the seven decisions, I realized that when I had adopted some huge changes in my life, these were indeed the rules I had set down for myself--only Andy Andrews wrote them with such clarity and beauty that it resonated hugely with me. The seven decisions are:
The Responsible Decision: The buck stops here. I accept responsibility for my past. I am responsible for my success. I will not let my history control my destiny. The Guided Decision: I will seek wisdom. The Active Decision: I am a person of action. The Certain Decision: I have a decided heart. Criticism, condemnation, and complaint have no power over me. The Joyful Decision: Today I will choose to be happy. The Compassionate Decision: I will greet this day with a forgiving spirit. The Persistent Decision: I will persist without exception.
So, while reading the book for me was really fun, I like the audio version, because I can put it in the car and listen to it and remind myself from time to time about how to keep my attitude positive and useful to me. Andy Andrews is a great motivational speaker and writer, and having his words to listen to whenever you want is a great companion to this book. If you are looking for techniques to master his philosophy of positive thinking and action, I suggest Mastering the Seven Decisions That Determine Personal Success: An Owner's Manual to the New York Times Bestseller, The Traveler's Gift which is a companion piece and helps you change your behavior to achieve this mindset.
I'm telling you, if you sincerely adopt these principles, your life will be better than you ever could imagine it.
